Let’s Go Logging
Let’s Go Logging
Have you ever made a judgment about someone, then later find out your judgement was wrong
How fast do we make a judgment about other?
Princeton University in a study found that people make judgments on whether or not someone is trustworthy, competent, and likable within one second of seeing someone's face(trustworthiness clocking in at an incredible 100 milliseconds).
1 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. 3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. 6 “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.
Here Jesus is still continuing on with trying to reshape the minds of the people from the fallacies they have been taught by the Pharisees. They had put legalism and condemnation on people.
Do not Judge (v.1-2)
Do not Judge (v.1-2)
1 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
We are responsible for what God has revealed to us (deut 29:29)
Everyone is at a different point in their faith
Repentance brings me into relationship with Jesus which then allows me to get sanctified day by day
What you dish out that is what will be dished out to you. If you are a person who is alway judging other your going be judge also.
If you are a person who show mercy you also will be given mercy.
Luke shows gives us a little more incite into what happen when we take place of being a judge over others.
37 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
39 Then Jesus gave the following illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch? 40 Students are not greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher.
41 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 42 How can you think of saying, ‘Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
43 “A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit.
Fault finding in others but not seeing what God is trying to work in you, keeps us from produce good fruit.
Judgement does not produce righteousness in me or in others
1 Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. 2 For instance, one person believes it’s all right to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. 3 Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to condemn someone else’s servants? Their own master will judge whether they stand or fall. And with the Lord’s help, they will stand and receive his approval.
Jesus was not saying that we should not have courts and law enforcement, was not saying we should not think critically, was not saying to not take a stand on a doctrinal or moral issue, was not saying to not correct those in error. But we should judge correctly.
John 7:21–24 (NLT)
21 Jesus replied, “I did one miracle on the Sabbath, and you were amazed. 22 But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses’ law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision began with the patriarchs, long before the law of Moses.) 23 For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should you be angry with me for healing a man on the Sabbath? 24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.”
You see the outside but cannot see what is on the inside
Don’t be a hypocrite (v.3-5)
Don’t be a hypocrite (v.3-5)
3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
1 You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. 2 And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. 3 Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? 4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin? 5 But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 He will judge everyone according to what they have done. 7 He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. 8 But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.
All of these things come from a root of sin
It is Jesus' kindness that calls us to repentance not His judgment
Condemnation vs discernment (v.6)
Condemnation vs discernment (v.6)
Matthew 7:6 (NLT)
6 “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.
It would be unthinkable to give this sacred food to scavenger dogs. In the same way, it would also be futile to give pearls to pigs. “What is sacred” and “pearls” picture the teaching of the gospel of the kingdom (see 13:45–46 where the kingdom of heaven is compared to a pearl of great value).
Jesus explained the futility of teaching the gospel to people who do not want to listen; such people will only tear apart what we say.
Pigs do not realize the value of pearls; all they know is that they cannot eat them, so they spit them out and then trample them into the mud.
Contemptuous, evil people cannot grasp the value of the gospel, so they scornfully cast it away.
We should not stop giving God’s Word to unbelievers, but we should be wise and discerning so as not to bring scorn to God’s message.
We are not called to be an accuser but to be a witness pointing back to what God has done for us.
There's a difference between being critical and legalistic versus doing things to edify and produce righteousness.
11 Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. 12 God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?
Galatians 6:1-10 “1 Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. 4 Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. 5 For we are each responsible for our own conduct. 6 Those who are taught the word of God should provide for their teachers, sharing all good things with them. 7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. 8 Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from…”
