“I’m Yoked to This”
“Fix This Ship” Series: Pt. 9
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Matthew 11:28-30
PARTNERSHIPS:
Takes the meaning of membership of step further, if you just belonging to an organization, or some type of movement, or club. You can be a member of a club, or some other organization and it has a consumer mentality. I paid to be a part of the club and I get my benefits from it.
Partnership as it suggest active participation and partnership where every individual is considered a joint in the body, designed to provide support to everyone in the body. It is more than just coming in to get something for me for my tithe and offering. Partners not see themselves as individuals belonging to the whole, but they are instrumental parts of the whole, that without their participation the whole is not fully whole.
In legal firms, there is a difference between an associate and a partner. You can be simply on salary or be a part of profit sharing.
Partnership is its ability to accomplish more together, than apart. It recognizes that a team is stronger than a lone individual.
Deuteronomy 32:30
30 How could one have chased a thousand, and two have put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had given them up?
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
ICEBREAKER:
Foundational Scripture:
Hebrews 5:12 - 6:2
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. 1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
The Seven Principles of Doctrine:
Repentance from Dead Works
Faith towards God
Doctrine of Baptisms
Laying on of Hands;
Eternal Judgment
Resurrection from the Dead
Perfection/Maturity
Opening Question: How do you define “faith”?
Faith towards God
Defining Biblical Faith:
The Greek word for faith is "pistis" which means "firm persuasion, trust, or belief, total dependence upon".
To have faith in God is to trust wholly in God and to be dependent upon Him. Therefore, we no longer focus on trying to impress God or other people, but rather our energy if directed toward trusting in God for our every need. We need not concern ourselves with things God has already assured us He will take care of.
“Faith - Is acting as if God is telling the truth.” - Tony Evans
Matthew 6: 25-34.
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Romans 12:3,
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
These verses bring out important aspects of faith - We have to understand we are valuable in His sight, and as God’s children, He will take care if us providing what we need. Also, even the ability to believe in God was given to us. God has assigned us each of us a measure of faith, He has given us the ability to trust and believe in Him.
Hebrews 11:1-3
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
The Greek word for "substance", hupostasis, means "to support from beneath, a setting or placing under, a thing put under, substructure, and foundation, that which has foundation, is firm, that which has actual existence". The word "hope", elpis, means "to expect".
So faith is the foundation of what we expect from God, things based on His promises. Faith assures us that although the promise is not yet seen in the natural, it most certainly is coming to pass and because of that, we base our current reality in the fact that it will come to pass. It is going to happen! A promise is only as good as the one who is giving the promise.
2 Corinthians 5:7
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
God has already given every believer the ability to believe in the unseen things. According to Romans 12:3, God has given to each of us a measure of faith. This is how we are able to believe in an unseen God. Though He is not visible in the natural.
Question: If you’re not walking by faith then how are you walking?
The answer is simple. If God is not controlling your life, it's because you are not letting Him - you are in control. You not honoring Him as Lord. If you are not operating out of faith, you are operating out of disobedience, for whatever is not from faith is sin (Romans 14:23b). There can be no walk with God or living for God apart from your active faith and reliance on the promises of His Word. Our lives are not pleasing to Him if we live in fear and do not trust Him.
Hebrews 11:6
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
God demands that we live a life of faith. However, when we ask God to do something for us, we must first seek His wisdom about the issue. He promised that if we ask for wisdom, He would freely give it to us.
James 1:5
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Amounts of Faith:
Little Faith – Jesus says a person that worries about everyday things, food, clothes, drink, the necessities of life, had little faith. Little faith only believes that “God can”
Matthew 6:30; 14:28-31
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Great Faith – The Centurion having natural authority recognized the spiritual authority of Jesus that if He would just speak things would happen. This kind of faith Jesus calls “great” Great faith comes to the resolution that “God will”.
Matthew 8:5-13; 15:21-28 (NKJV)
5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” 7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.
21 Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” 23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” 24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Perfect Faith – James is saying that faith without subsequent action is useless faith. Even Peter, with “little faith”, put his faith in action and walked on water. James tells us that faith is made perfect by how we respond to it (work, action). Perfect faith is when the believer comes to the resolution that not only “God can”, and “God will”, but “God has”. And because He has, one’s actions reflect the confidence that the promise has already come to pass. This type of faith says, “It’s already done!”
James 2:20-22 (NKJV)
20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
Examples: Abraham (Romans 4:19-21), Noah (Hebrews 11:7)
19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
CLOSING: Having faith towards God, believing what He’s said in His word, putting our trust in His promises is part of our DNA as believers. The fruit of faith is part what we get from the Holy Spirit; Galatians 5:22-24. The gift of faith, 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. The gift of faith is a special impartation of faith on the believer for the common good of others. Since our unbelief hinders the working of God in our lives, God then, gives us a gift of faith to believe beyond our current faith level.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Repentance from dead works, and faith towards God are opposite sides of the same coin. You really cannot have one without the other, and working together make our Christian journey more productive and lessens the feeling of guilt, so we can be active participants, full partners if you will, advancing God’s kingdom agenda.
