I. Jesus Mocked vs.16-21
I. Jesus Mocked vs.16-21
A. They beat Jesus to a bloody pulp, and mocked Him, when they ripped the robe off, it reopened the wounds on His back.
B. Alexander and Rufus were Christians/elders in the church in Rome. This shows that our faithfulness has lasting repercussions for generations. What Simon (and perhaps his family) witnessed that day changed their lives forever. Rom. 16:13
Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; also his mother, who has been a mother to me as well.
II. Jesus Crucified vs. 22-41
II. Jesus Crucified vs. 22-41
A. Jesus was slain outside of the city. His clothes stripped and cast lots for, and hung beside of two thieves to fulfill Scripture. We are to follow Jesus example. He related to everyone, but didn’t sin with them.
B. The Father turned His back on Jesus because He became sin for us. We sometimes feel abandoned by God. Jesus was abandoned by God, He knows how you feel.
C. The wicked and perverse generation wanted a sign, they got it when the veil was torn. This showed that Jesus opened the way between the Father and man!
D. The darkness from noon to 3 showed God’s judgment on this.
E. The Roman had more faith than the Sanhedrin
III. Jesus Buried vs. 42-47
III. Jesus Buried vs. 42-47
A. Joseph of Arimethea and Nicodemus buried Jesus thus making themselves unclean on the Sabbath. This was a big step, in order to step out as a Christ follower. They probably lost their family, and all social standing. John 19:38-42
After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.
Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.
So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
B. Things looked dark, all hope seemed lost, but it was only Friday. Your situation might seem hopeless but it ain’t over yet!
