The Triumph of Grace over the Power of the Law (7:1-6)

A. PARALLEL TO BEING RELEASED FROM MARRIAGE (1-3)

1. Law has dominion over those who live under it (1)

2. As illustrated by a woman who is married to a man (2-3)

Before death, the law of marriage is binding… “till death do us part”.

death dissolves those connections and relations which make law binding in life.

B. THEY HAVE DIED TO THE LAW (4-6)

1. So they can be married to Christ (4)

We are in Christ…

We died with Him: released from our marriage to the law

We rose with Him: free to marry Christ

Our purpose was to bear fruit for God

2. So they can serve in newness of the Spirit, far superior to serving in the oldness of the letter (5-6)

What does it mean to have died to the Law?

What it is not…

Freedom from it’s obedience (antinomianism)

Freedom from it’s obligation

What it is…

Freedom from it’s condemnation

Freedom from it as a way of justification and sanctification
