PRAY

Before we dive into Gods word, join me in prayer

PREFACE / LAST WEEK / BG INFO

We have a lot to get through this morning and we are going top jump through our story “NMBC” style.
So often we read the Bible from the perspective of being that character
We might think we are Joseph in this story
And sometimes we are.
Josephs story can be a huge encouragement to us.
a story of persistence and trust in God
But often are we actually his family
And I believe that there is a huge lesson we can learn from their part of the story.
We see Joseph and His brothers are tending to the sheep but are separated
Joseph is told where they are and set off after him
And this is where we are going to pick it up

CHAPTER 37: 17-20

17 And the man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

18 They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him. 19 They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. 20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.”

When they saw him in the distance they started their plot against him.
How long could that have taken?
They couldn’t have spent much time to actually think through it.
this is an awful plan.
But how often do we make poor decisions in the heat of the moment when we are filled with rage?
Blinded by anger and hatred
all logical thought goes out the door RIGHT?
I think this is the place his brothers were in.
I would like to submit to you this morning that Josephs Brothers need to Dream again.
Josephs brothers were so entrenched in their insecurities that they failed to see the amazing news in Joseph’s dream.
Jacob, their Father was very clear and vocal that Joseph was his favorite.
They hated him for that
So when they heard his dream about ____
It infuriated them

POINT ONE

The quickest way to loose your dream is to envy someone else's.
I believe God gives each and everyone one of a dream.
I believe that Joseph’s brothers had a dream for their life.
Maybe hey, or you don’t have a litteral dream from God, but he places a call and plan for lives into all of.
If they would have focused more on their own plan and calling it wouldn’t have mattered what Joseph’s was
They were fill with so much jealously becuase he was the favorite that it made them focus more on him then themselves
Kindergarden stealing linkon logs
I wanted them so bad
I decided to steal them becuase i didn’t have any and I didn’t think my parents would get me any.
I hid them behind the TV and would play with them secretly
Wasn’t as fun that way
Got caught and they were taking away
Parents would have gotten them for me but becuase of that they never did.
As silly as that story is my greed and jealousy made me loose sight of what could be.
I took the impulsive easy way out and at the end of the day it didn’t pay off.
Let’s keep going.

CHAPTER 37: 20-24

20 Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. Then we will say that a fierce animal has devoured him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.” 21 But when Reuben heard it, he rescued him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand to restore him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore. 24 And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

Imagine expecting a warm welcome from your brothers only the be stripped of your clothes and thrown down a pit.
He most have been so terrified and confused.
The Pit was most likely 30 feet deep and with nothing to break his fall

And this is the worse part

CHAPTER 37: 25

25 Then they sat down to eat.

what kind person can do that to someone and then just sit down for a snack.
they also would have been in earshot of him
This plan clearly wasn’t very thought through and it definitely not prayed about
how often (not this bad) but do we make bad and quick decisions.
they put their snap thoughts before Gods plans and desire
when we loose our dreams we let our emotions and quick thinking take control over our lives
It guides us instead of us letting God guide us.
So how do we get out of this cycle??
what is the solution??

POINT TWO

2. The first step to dreaming again, is praying again.
ADD SUPPORTING TEXT
Joseph was honest, responsible, and smart
the exact kind of person you would want in charge
His brothers could have had a great leader
And Joseph probably could have taken on a lot of the work load if was still around.
But his brothers failed to dream of what could have been becuase they were blinded by their own insecurities and jealousy

CHAPTER 37: 25-28

Then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. 26 Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him. 28 Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.

Ch.37 v.28 “sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver” that would be the equivalent of $240 today.
also split that 10 ways for each brother?
Or $24 dollars each
They Decided to do things there own way and settled for less.
how many times do we try to do things on our own without consulting God and it doesn’t go well
But i think the greatest news for us is that juhygc d

POINT THREE

3. God can redeem your mistakes and use them for something Good.
Amen?
We saw last week how this story ends
Joseph Got put second in command of Egypt
Was able to share and proclaim God to the whole nation
He fulfilled his dream
And not only did he save his family famine, but the whole nation
Story of shipwrecked man
The very thing which seemed to seal the doom of this marooned man was the means of his delivery. What seemed to spell disaster for him became an instrument of his salvation.
He made a mistake when lighting the fire and set his only shelter with all of his supplies to live on fire
But yet, that is what ended up saving him.
And that is exactly what we see in this story.
We can all agree trying to kill and then selling your brother into slavery is a mistake and you shouldn’t do it.
I don’t think you can argue with me on that
They made an awful mistake that should have ended horribly
Or how about this true story
Greg story
Greg graciously offered to use his truck to move the trailer
I thought I would be able to tow it fine
“It wasn’t”
Drive fine before — Next day transmission went out — 96k miles of 100k miles
In two days he got a brand new transmission with another 100k mile warranty
I mistakenly thought his truck would work, but i ended up breaking it.
EVEN in my mistake God worked in the situation and BLESSED Greg.
I’m not saying being carless is fine, and making mistakes is good.
What i am telling you is even your worst mistakes God can redeem.

CLOSING

What dream have you given up on?
What mistakes are have you let stop you, that God actually wants to redeem
Satan has spread a lie, that you mistakes means God sees you as mistake
Alter call
Command and own the prayer at end
Prayer team will be available
Benediction closing
