Romans 1:14-17
This passage contains one of the most important verses in Romans.
It is the text or the theme of the letter.
And in it we find the very core of Christianity.
The Gospel
Here Paul makes three “I am...” statements in his desire to preach the gospel.
I. Paul’s Burden
vs.14
“I am debtor...”
debtor - opheiletēs (of·i·let·ace) an obligated person.
He saying he is obligated to to preach the gospel
He had the Good News.
He was saved and he knew it!
Society today is very entitled.
The truth is we all are to one extent or another.
But we are indebted to the gospel, we don’t have a right to not share it with anyone else who has not heard.
To the Greeks there were only two type of people: Greeks and everyone else (Barbarians)
Same with the Jews
Truth is same with us Americans.
But truth is there are only two types of people: the saved and the unsaved.
We are obligated as a saved individual to share the good news.
Just as if you were to see a house on fire and people trapped you would be obligated by morality to do something (call, help, etc.).
If we had in our hands the cure for cancer we would be obligated by morality to share it with others.
If someone had the cure and kept it to themselves they would be viewed as evil and selfish, and they would be in my opinion.
In 2 Kings 7 we are told about the Syrian army surrounding the city of Samaria for many months.
four leprous men in the gates of the city, because they were not allowed in the city.
They said we might as well go to the Syrian army and maybe they will have mercy on us, if not at least it will be a quicker death.
But when they got there they found the camp emptied by the Lord, and all the food and gold still there.
They rightfully enjoyed the miracle of God’s provision and ate and took of the gold…then they had a realization...
good tidings - besorah - good news - gospel
These leapers realized they would be wrong to have this good news in their possession and not share it.
They had a responsibility.
We too have a responsibility before God.
“The Gospel is not a secret to be hoarded but a story to be heralded.
Too many Christians are stuffing themselves with Gospel blessings, while millions have never had a taste.”
- Vance Havner
We are just one beggar telling another where I found bread.
Paul had a Burden to tell the gospel, the second “I am...” statement Paul makes is regarding...
II.
Paul’s Boldness
vs. 15
“…I am ready...”
As much as in me…With everything I have I am ready to pay my debt
by preaching the Gospel!
The Good News!
It’s not my opinion
It’s not my philosophy
It’s not my religion
It is the good news of the gospel!
Christ died for our sin, was buried and rose again on the third day so that we can have salvation!
When kids turn sixteen, they often take an in-car driving course to prepare them for their driver’s license test.
I want you to imagine with me a driving instructor who meticulously teaches the student how to properly adjust the seat and put on the seat belt, how to adjust the mirrors so that the view is as clear as possible.
He talks about how to hold the steering wheel and the importance of making smooth turns to the right or left.
The use of the CD player is explained in detail.
The instructor has an interesting lesson on operating the air conditioner and heater, pointing out all the adjustments of air flow, heat and cool levels and fan speed.
He teaches the student all the speed levels on the windshield wiper knob and where to find each light switch.
The experience is enjoyable and the instructor is very pleasant and articulate as he communicates all this helpful information.
However, the student is never taught how to turn on the ignition so that the power of the engine is available for the process.
Many helpful things are taught, but the student is also not taught how to put the car in gear and operate the accelerator.
So the instruction given is not wrong; it simply leaves out the main point; and when the main point is left out, the rest matters very little.
Ready to preach the gospel
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures
He was buried
He rose again the third day according to Scripture.
Paul was eager not to preach a Philosophy or a Procedure, but a Person!
III.
Paul’s Belief
vs. 16-17
So many are ashamed of the gospel!
There is no such thing as an undercover Christian.
Why is so hard?
Because the devil doesn’t want you to do it, so he is going to put every obstacle possible in front of you.
The gospel is about Jesus Christ
If you are ashamed of the gospel, you are ashamed of Jesus!
Why was Paul unashamed of the gospel?
A. Its Source
vs. 16
It is the gospel of Christ.
It is the power of God
there in is the righteousness of God revealed.
It is God’s good news!
Man can not save himself
But God says, no it is my way
My ways are not your ways, my thoughts are not your thoughts!
