INTRODUCTION: Josh - pray God wins, so gas will get cheap. haha

Seek God when attacks come. - Exodus 17:1-7

Exodus 17:1 ESV
1 All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.
rephidim - a resting place.
no water - reoccuring theme. They are in a dessert.
Exodus 17:2 ESV
2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”
quarreled - this was similar to a declaration of intent to sue.
why are you attacking me…You are actually attacking God.
In previous chapter God tested them, now they wanted to test God.
Exodus 17:3 ESV
3 But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”
thirsted for water -
AGAIN!? They are making the same complaint again. Being overdramatic is a sign of lack maturity. A mature person would say, that would be unreasabole and god keeps providing it when we need it.
Exodus 17:4 ESV
4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
HAHA - what do I do with these kids?
stone me - So they are triyng to go through the official process of killing him!
HAHA gives me comfort. Moses, one of the greatest leaders in the history of the word, literally wanted to murder him.

Seek God by crying out to Him.

Exodus 17:5 ESV
5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
pass before the peole - make sure they see you do this.
elders of israel - these would have been the men to judge Moses.
staff (nile). He is reminding Moses of the power to punish. But that power was going to be used for provision.
Exodus 17:6 ESV
6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Behold - pay attention.
The lord will stand there.
Horeb - Exodus 3.
........

Seek God by obeying Him.

Exodus 17:7 ESV
7 And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
massah - testing
Meribah - qualling.
Because they tested the Lord Matthew 4:7 “Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ””

Find help when attacks come.- Exodus 17:8-16

Exodus 17:8 ESV
8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.
Amalek (his people that is)- Esau grandson.
They would pick off the weak ones in the back of the line.
Exodus 17:9 ESV
9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”
Joshua - first mention.
choose for us men - they have never fought before.
I will stand on the top of the hill - haha real great help Moses.
staff of God - his power and presense.
Exodus 17:10 ESV
10 So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
hill - so it was close enough for them to see Moses too.
Exodus 17:11 ESV
11 Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.
haha - up down up down.
Like superstitious football watching. Don’t move! haha
That gets tiring very quicklg though
Exodus 17:12 ESV
12 But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Moses - over 80 at this point.
(ILLUSTRATION OF HOLDING HANDS UP - OF OF PLANKING, SLOWS TIME DOWN)
they provided a seat first.
Then they held up his hands.
Exodus 17:13 ESV
13 And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.
Who was more important, the men fighting, Moses, or Aaron and Hur? - They all were.

Understand that Battles are not meant to be fought alone.

Exodus 17:14 ESV
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.”
This was the oldest portion of Scripture.
Recite it Joshua’s ears - if we didn’t knwo the rest of the sotry. We would likely say, why was he so important?

Understand that it is God who fights for us.

Exodus 17:15 ESV
15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner,
buitl an alter - a place of worship.
The Lord is My Banner - Jehovah Nissi
Exodus 17:16 ESV
16 saying, “A hand upon the throne of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
