Some of the Pharisees warned Jesus about Herod.

Many of the Pharisees had continuously questioned Jesus’ motives.
Those in power felt threatened by Jesus’ popularity.
Many other Pharisees were drawn to Jesus.

Herod the Great

Son of Herod the Great, the man who tried to kill Jesus by killing many newborn sons.
The man who killed John the Baptist because of his truth-telling about his incestuous affections.
Herod Antipas was rightly called a “Fox” because of his sly intrigue.

They were afraid of the power of Herod, client king of Rome.

Jesus had every reason to believe the threat to his life was real.

Biblical and historical records showed that the rulers of Israel, who were based in Jerusalem, persecuted, and killed many of the prophets of God.
Many other prophets were killed by the rulers of Jerusalem,

Herod had John the Baptist killed, why wouldn’t they kill Jesus too?

Jesus is even sarcastic about it, “surely no prophet can die outside of Jerusalem!”

Threats are often used to compel us.

Power Plays

True negotiations cannot be held with a gun pointed at your head.

Jesus remained unconcerned, even sarcastic, of the threat that he was warned about.

Jesus was on the mission of his life to drive out the demonic, heal the sick and free the oppressed.

What would it look like if he allowed the oppressors threats deter him?

Jesus did not let the threat of a political leader deter him from his mission.

The warning that Jesus received would be accomplished by their leaders in Jerusalem.

Jesus did not let the risk of his life of losing his life deter him from his mission.

Jesus was more concerned with saving Jerusalem than Jerusalem was in finding their Savior.

Jesus longed to gather them, but he was only met with rejection.

Jesus expressed the pain of rejection.

Jesus had a mission to accomplish, and he would persevere.

An uncommon courage accompanies people on a divine mission.

The same Spirit that was motivating and empowering Jesus’ mission is the same on that empowers his disciples.

Purpose is more important than approval/disapproval.

Rejection can cause us pain or discouragement.

But when we live by God’s good and gracious purposes, we are empowered with courageous faith.

God’s heart is broken by our sin and stubbornness.

Salvation is the result of seeking and loving God who is not willing to let any die in sin.

God graciously pursues us even while we show little, or no, interest in return.

It is because of God’s gracious pursuit that all find true redemption.

Sharing that grace is a mission worth of faithfulness.
