Introduction
Mark is one of the Gospels - it tells us how we can be reconciled to God and gain eternal life
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (ESV)
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Introduction (Continued)
Preceded by John, Jesus came from Galilee
John got the people’s attention
Jesus began his ministry
Signs and wonders demonstrated His lessons
Cripples, diseases, resurrections, casting out demons
Created food from nothing - controlled the weather
Knew He was going to the cross - trained His disciples
Last week: Jesus had an encounter with a group of Scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem.
He exposed their sin and corruption.
Offended, they they departed.
Today: After the Pharisees depart, Jesus gives us a lesson on where sin comes from.
The sin of the Pharisees was normal, in the world
Total depravity and its noetic effects on our actions and understanding
We are slow in understanding spiritual things
Mark 7:14 “And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand:”
Mark 7:18 “And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding?
Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,”
The corruption of human nature is a universal disease
Sin affects everything, not just heart, will and conscience, but our thinking, our memory, and understanding
Intelligent people often cannot understand the simple truths of God’s word - cannot understand the Gospel
Sound like a foreign language (gets a little bit)
1 Cor 1:21 “For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.”
He hears but does not understand
We need to pray for the teaching of the Holy Spirit to help us understand and make progress in our walk
Without the Holy Spirit, our brains and reason won’t get us far
In reading the Bible, listening to preaching, everything depends on the Holy spirit
A humble, child-like attitude is the secret of success
Ps 119:64 “The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!”
The human heart is the chief source of impurity in God’s sight
Moral purity does not depend on washing or not washing, touching things or not, eating things or not, as the Scribes and Pharisees taught
Mark 7:15 “There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.””
Deep truth often overlooked: our personal sinfulness and natural tendency to evil (understanding this is the beginning of salvation)
Often blame bad examples, bad company, temptations, the devil
We forget: we have a fountain of wickedness in our hearts
Cannot blame other people or things
Within us, we have the potential for every sin possible
This is very important when raising our children
Children are born as troublemakers - not born good or innocent
Keeping children home, away from temptation is not enough
They are already infected with sin - ready for all kinds of sin - they are not safe, unless their heart is changed
When children do wrong, we often blame friends or outside influences - we are ignorant, blind and foolish to do so
No outside influences are as damaging as their own hearts, unless they are renewed by the Holy Spirit
The beginning of all wickedness is within
If we are half as diligent in praying for our children’s salvation/conversion, as we are in keeping them away from bad company, they would turn out better than they do
The many sins of the human heart
We talked of kids - every one’s heart contains this catalogue of sins, and more
We are talking about everyone here, not just the folks considered “bad”, like various criminals
All, high and low, rich and poor, bosses and employees, young and old, educated and uneducated - all have this heart that Jesus describes
Some sins may lie dormant all our lives - kept under control by fear of punishment, public opinion, fear of discovery, desire to be thought respectable - by the mighty grace of God
Everyone has within them the root of every sin
This ought to make us really humble
Isai.
64:6 “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”
God sees in each of us the evils others never see - He reads our hearts
Of all sins we are capable of, self-righteousness is the most unreasonable and ugly
Bringing it home
We should be thankful for the God’s word, when we read these words
His Word provides for all the wants and needs of our poor, sinful natures
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
The Holy Spirit can change our sinful hearts and keep them clean
The person who does not glory or rejoice in the Gospel, cannot know about the disease that is within
We need to watch ourselves when we remember these verses
Carefully guard imaginations, tongues, daily behaviour
Head of that list: evil thoughts - don’t forget that
Thoughts are the parents of words and actions
Pray daily for grace to keep our thoughts under control
Let us pray hard: “lead us not into temptation”
