Zechariah 4 Part 1
Return to Yahweh for the
Illuminating Work of the Holy Spirit
Ezra 5:1–2 (ESV)
1Now
the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of
Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and
Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was
2
over them. Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and
Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild
the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the
prophets of God were with them, supporting them.
Zechariah 4:1–3 (ESV)
1And
the angel who talked with me came again and woke
2
me, like a man who is awakened out of his sleep. And he
said to me, “What do you see?” I said, “I see, and behold,
a lampstand all of gold, with a bowl on the top of it, and
seven lamps on it, with seven lips on each of the lamps
3
that are on the top of it. And there are two olive trees by
it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

Zechariah 4:4-5 (ESV)
4And
I said to the angel who talked with
5
me, “What are these, my lord?” Then the
angel who talked with me answered and
said to me, “Do you not know what these
are?” I said, “No, my lord.”
Isaiah 51:4 (ESV)
“Give attention to me, my people, and give ear to
me, my nation; for a law will go out from me,
and I will set my justice for a light to the
peoples.
Psalm 147:19–20 (ESV)
19He
[Zion’s God from v. 12] declares his word
to Jacob, his statutes and rules to Israel.
20He has not dealt thus with any other
nation; they do not know his rules. Praise
the LORD!
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light
to my path.
Proverbs 6:23 (ESV)
For the commandment is a lamp and the
teaching a light, and the reproofs of
discipline are the way of life,
1 Corinthians 6:19 (ESV)
Or do you not know that your body is a
temple of the Holy Spirit within you,
whom you have from God? You are not your
own,
1 Corinthians 3:16–17 (ESV)
16Do
you not know that you [plural] are God’s
temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you
17
[plural]? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God
will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and
you [plural] are that temple.
1 Corinthians 1:2 (ESV)
To the church of God that is in Corinth, to
those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to
be saints together with all those who in
every place call upon the name of our Lord
Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
Zechariah 4:5–6 (ESV)
5Then
the angel who talked with me answered
and said to me, “Do you not know what these
6
are?” I said, “No, my lord.” Then he said to me,
“This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel:
Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,
says the LORD of hosts.
Exodus 31:1–5 (ESV)
1The
2“See,
LORD said to Moses,
I have called by
name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of
3
Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God,
with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all
4
craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in
5
gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting,
and in carving wood, to work in every craft.
1 Samuel 16:13 (ESV)
13Then
Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him
[David] in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of
the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.
And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
2 Chronicles 24:20 (ESV)
Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the
son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above
the people, and said to them, “Thus says God,
‘Why do you break the commandments of the
Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because
you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken
you.’ ”
1 Corinthians 2:10–14 (ESV)
10 these things [the message of the cross of Christ in 1
Corinthians 1:18-2:9] God has revealed to us through the
Spirit. . . . Now we have received . . . the Spirit who is from
God, that we might understand the things freely given us
13
by God. And we impart this in words not taught by
human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting
14
spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural
person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for
they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them
because they are spiritually discerned.
Psalm 119:130 (ESV)
The unfolding of your words gives light; it
imparts understanding to the simple.
“Our fellowship or communion with the Holy
Spirit should stir us to give him praise,
thanks, glory, honour, and blessing for the
mercies and privileges we receive from him,
as we do the Son for his work of redemption.”
—John Owen
Communion With God [abridged by R.J.K. Law, p. 207]
1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
No temptation has overtaken you that is not
common to man. God is faithful, and he will not
let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with
the temptation he will also provide the way of
escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:14 (ESV)
Therefore, my beloved,
flee from idolatry.
Romans 6:11–12 (ESV)
11So
you also must consider yourselves dead to
12
sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin
therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you
obey its passions.
Romans 15:13 (ESV)
May the God of hope fill you with all joy
and peace in believing, so that by the
power of the Holy Spirit you may abound
in hope.
