Free From Sin
ROMANS 8 1-3
Innocent
Paul makes it clear of an immediate response to the receiving of salvation. There is therefore now a clear indication that Christ deliverance in my life has cancelled out the law of death and sin that were once ruler of our life. Deliverance is a right now effect, it is not a slow over time process but this happens as soon we accept the work that Christ has done for us out on Calvary’s Cross.
The text tells us the one of the benefits we have in salvation is that we are no longer condemned (κατάκριμα katakrima, kat-ak´-ree-mah; from 2632; an adverse sentence (the verdict): — condemnation). In other words we will no longer be judged against. In a sense even though we were caught red handed, caught with our hand in the cookie jar, and are known sinners, after deliberations the verdict of our trial will come back with a unanimous NOT GUILTY: This verdict is not based off our good works, regardless of how well you are living your life. This verdict is due to the fact that Christ bore our sins, when He was nailed our sins were nailed, when He died our sins died, when He arose our sins stayed dead. He became the ultimate sacrifice for our life. This is what allows Paul to write and say “There is therefore now no condemnation to those of us who are in Christ.
Listen Paul does not end the verse there he adds another clause to the verse “who do not walk according to the flesh”. The text tells us that we are to not just give lip service, by saying I have accepted Christ, but are not really striving to change our sinful ways of living. We will never be perfect, but Paul made it clear in Romans 6:1-2 that because of salvation we have died to sin also and that we should not entertain it. “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? The text instructions us to live not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.
A New Law
Here in verse 2 Paul tells us we are innocent because of a new law, the law of The Spirit in Christ Jesus. Before this new law we were being governed by the law of sin and death. We would stop at nothing to fulfill our fleshly desires, we would go to extremes just to satisfy the flesh, often time not caring that these fleshly desires and sins would surely bring about death. We were destined for hell our sins were consuming us. The apostle makes it clear in the beginning Roman 6:23 that we were on the verge of being compensated for our sins “For the wages of sin is death”. But my brothers and sisters here Paul interjects A NEW LAW!! One that has power over sin and death, one that has set us free from sin and death, one that has evicted sin and death, one that has arrested us, one that has took ownership of us. I am referring to the Life giving law of The Holy Spirit that now resides in us. This law has made the old law obsolete, Allow me to use this illustration of how this new law works. The law of sin and death was similar to being bitten by a highly venomous serpent, the body would incur pain and suffering depending on what kind of serpent it was blood may clot, organs may shut down, bodily functions would stop, surely death was coming. But being injected with the right substance, which most of the time was a form of anti-venom that contained venom from that same species. The clotting would stop, organs would continue to function, the body would continue to function, and the venom that once plagued your body would be no more. In our case we were injected with the blood of the one that died carrying our sins. I can only speak for me but I am so thankful that his new law has rescued me from death.
Conqueror of Sin
The text points out in verse 3 that old law was weak and powerless, it could highlight our sin, condemn our sins and even stimulate our sins, but it couldn’t remove our sins. The animal sacrifices were never meant to save us only to provide a temporary covering. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, the law was unable to save us, or set us free! The flesh was weak and would never be able to obtain the righteousness God requires. God would have been fair to let us face judgement the way we were. But God had a plan!! Because of His loving kindness, and mercy He sent us Conqueror of sin. God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, He sent His only begotten son, and wrapped Him in the very thing that we could not defeat flesh. The same flesh that we chased after, the same flesh that caused us to sin and fall short, the same flesh we went to extremes to fulfill its desire GOD SENT HIS SON TO CONQUER IT ONCE AND FOR ALL. He sent Jesus on the matter of sin on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh. My brothers and sisters we could not handle this thing called flesh/sin on our own but thank God He sent our big brother, Jesus to defeat sin. He was able to conquer sin because of His sinless life. He was able to conquer sin because ONE FIRDAY………….
