Genesis 42:25-.

A reminder, Joseph has seen his brothers, though they didn’t know it
They lied still about Joseph
He made accusations against them and required them to go get his brother Benjamin
So he bound up simeon and kept him until they would come back with their little brother.
this is where we pick up in vs 25

Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them, 26 they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

27 At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack. 28 “My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

Joseph had said he would send them back with the grain for their families, but he did not tell them they wouldn’t be paying for it.
This has caused great confusion for the brothers
Have you ever had someone you didn’t get along with suddenly do something nice for you?
This happens and we believe there must be some kind of hidden agenda behind that act of kindness.
Here these brothers are, they have already determined they are being punished by God for their actions against Joseph
Then they discover they got their grain and supplies and their money back, so they are confused.
it could also make them look more like they are spies or were that they were up to no good, because they didn’t know it was Joseph who put it back
So it could look like they took they grain and supplies and took their money back themselves
in the next few verses, they arrive at home, they tell Jacob everything the governor said, including the fact that they need to take Benjamin back there to get Simeon back.
Let’s jump down to vs. 35

As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened. 36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”

37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.”

38 But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.

Jacob at this point doesn’t know what to think of these sons
He doesn’t know what goes on with these trips, but twice now, when they have gone off together, they have come back without one of his sons
He has no desire to see Benjamin disappear as well
Reuben tries to reason, by offering up his own sons
but Jacob is not having it and is sticking to his guns
He doesn’t want to lose any more children
vs.1 of chapter 43

Now the famine was still severe in the land. 2 So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”

3 But Judah said to him, “The man warned us solemnly, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ 4 If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you. 5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ ”

6 Israel asked, “Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?”

7 They replied, “The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. ‘Is your father still living?’ he asked us. ‘Do you have another brother?’ We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

Some time has passed.
We don’t know how much, but time has passed and they are running low on food
Jacob wants them to go get more, but they know they can’t go without Benjamin being with them
He then questions them why they told this man about Benjamin
Jacob at this point is realizing that he is helpless.
what else can he do?
vs. 8

Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die. 9 I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. 10 As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.”

Judah, desperate for harm not to come to the whole family, steps up to take full responsibility for Benjamin
Remember, Judah was the one who had the idea to sell Joseph in the first place
Yet, he is the one committing the selfless act to step up for his family
This again, shows how God can use any vessel that is willing.
vs. 11

Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. 13 Take your brother also and go back to the man at once. 14 And may God Almighty p grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

Jacob is desperate and lost.
He has no choice to trust his sons who have failed him before.
He has them take the silver they need for the grain purchase
the silver that was put back in their bags
and several items as a gift to try and make certain nothing bad would happen to Benjamin
We can see at the end, Jacob is preparing himself for the worst
he basically says if he loses this son then he does, there is nothing more He can do.
right before that He says a pray asking God Almighty to grant mercy
It’s important that we see He says El Shoddai, which is a call to God in reference to his power
It is often that people wait until they are at their most desperate point to call upon God
What I hope to express is this
God is here for us when we authentically call to Him.
Yes, He is there in our greatest pits of dispair
However, that is not the only time He is there.
He is waiting for us to come, so why not come now
we don’t have to wait until we are in the lowest times of our lives, we can call upon Him right now!
