Transcript
Moving into something not so repetitive; a new theme of sorts
A wonderful, and reassuring, opening thought
We could have made this a lesson in past, present and future of our lives
Assuming the sinful, unforgiven, lifestyle
Becoming Children of the Living God
Coming of our resurrection bodies
Though there is linkage to the second coming, addressed in 2:18
“See” is more than a quick look. Implication is to look deeply, examine

Concept in View

A cause and effect question
Cause is formed with a question:
What kind of love? …has the Father Given us
Effect:
That we might become the children of God
A singular kind of love; the John 3:16 account; a statement of cause and effect
We see something similar when looking at Jn, 3,16
God so loved the world
“So,” is houtos, in this way
That was the cause…He so loved
That He gave His one and only Son (unico Hijo)
So that whoever believes in Him might not perish, but have everlasting life
The adoption as His children; right to be called the children of God
Romans 8:14–16 (ESV)
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. ...but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Like Him, unknown to the World John 1 11-12
John 1:11–12 ESV
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
His own people, the Jews, did not recognize him as the promised Messiah…the Son of the Living God…
We should expect to be strangers in a world in which Satan is the god of the age
2 Corinthians 4:4 (ESV)
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Our Coming Condition

…that future part
This is where we get some good news
What, not who, will we be?
Suggests something beyond what we know in our current existence—”one commentator: something unspeakable, contained in the likeness of God”
We will be “like him” (Jesus)
At our resurrection, the Rapture
A new body
1 Corinthians 15:42–44 ESV
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
We will be like Him then 1 Cor 15 49
1 Corinthians 15:49 ESV
Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.

The Coming One

…as He is pure
This is where we should focus much of our attention
Too many believers, too many churches, make Christianity all about US
If God exists to satisfy our needs, we do not have a theocentric faith; but a self-centered faith
In that case, God is not much of a god at all!
Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Indeed, He can sympathize with us; “feel our pain”
But....
There was no stain of sin upon Jesus
He (Jesus) is pure (holy); so should we be
To be like Him
1 Peter 1:14–15 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
If our hope is in Him—if it’s not, we have NOT been saved—our behavior should mimic His behavior
He NEVER sinned, though in all ways He was tempted as we are
He stood out as being different

WITFM?

If we are truly trusting in Him for our eternity—and our resurrection and glorification
Should we not be trusting Him in depending on His ways being right for our lives?
We can surely trust Him to get us through our pain…changing us through our circumstances; not the circumstances to fit our preferences
Should we not be working toward personal purity in our lives? Banishing sin from them?
Another concept to think about
How do we think about what His word defines as sin
We can find lists in various places,
OT scholars find 613 commandments; 248 DO and 365 DON’T
Across NT are many; I like the list from Gal 5 19ff.
sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,  envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
If we add Ro. 1, we can get things like gossip, disobedience to parents, heartless, ruthless....
The problem: culture likes to redefine sin
Anything that does not put God in the forefront of our lives is sin
Anything that puts us before others, is sin Pretty simple directive from the words of Jesus, found in Matt. Mark and Luke
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself...
Our culture, however, has changed our mindset: “Yeah, it’s bad; but not THAT bad”
If we are truly saved; truly transformed we should be loathing ALL sin; striving to eliminate from our lives
If you have a problem with drunkenness, stay away from all alcohol
If you have a weakness toward sexual sin, stay clear of those situations, stimuli, that take you to it
If you tend toward divisiveness, get out of the situations where you tend to get into the problem
Find the root cause---oh, yeah…it’s the sinful heart
Mark 7:21–22 ESV
For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness.
There’s a simple prayer: Ps 51 10
Psalm 51:10 ESV
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
As children of the Holy God, adopted as His sons and daughters; let us strive to be all his children should be
As Jesus stood out as being different—even if people didn’t know what to make of Him...
We should stand out as being different as we strive to be like Him in every way

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God

…and so we are!
Are you truly???
