Mental Health
What do you think when you hear that?
I think about someone who has a mental problem. They are crazy or “out of their mind”
They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
In this case the person’s mind was affected by demonic forces.
What can we say about people who are suffering mentally? Someone with a physical disability can still think and commit their lives to Christ. What about a person who is mentally disabled, are they able to enter heaven?
The Bible does not specifically say whether or not mentally ill people go to heaven. However, there is some biblical evidence that anyone who is not able to make a decision for salvation is covered by Christ’s death. This is similar to how it is commonly believed that children are automatically taken to heaven when they die until they reach the point in which they are able to make a decision for or against Christ. David had a child die, and he comforted himself with the thought, “Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me”
But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”
What about someone who can think clearly?
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
God commands us to live Him with our mind.
What does that mean and how can you do it?
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
The state of the mind is a very important thing. Our minds guide us through life, a good mind will bring success and wellbeing for yourself and those around you.
Repentance literally is the changing of your mind which in turn informs your actions
God expects us to be able to provide sound reasoning for our faith in him.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. So too the second and third, down to the seventh. After them all, the woman died. In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.” But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
How did Jesus respond? He provided an intelligent response.
How about others?
What about plagues of the mind?
Depression etc?
Elijah
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
Jonah
Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
Fear and anxiety
Fear and anxiety
fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
