INTRO:
INTRO:
In this text we see that God keeps His promises. He had foretold Messiah and the judgment which was coming to Israel was NOT going to cause Him to turn back on them.
He made them a nation, He punished their sin and He delivered them. Ultimately, He kept His promise to send His Son as Messiah to save the world from sin.
Ultimately, He will send Messiah back to rule and reign on Earth. This text discusses more details about the Messiah.
His ancestry
His ancestry
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
In the midst of a pronouncement of judgment, Israel could easily believe God was finished with them.
They were a stump of a tree which had been cut down.
Yet a shoot would arise
They were on hold and suspended due to Assyria and Babylon, but they would grow back!
Even greater than that, Messiah would still come!
Messiah would come from David’s family.
We know that this occured and He was named Jesus of Nazareth
Why did it matter?
a. God keeps His promises
b. There was a greater plan at play
God choose a man, Abram to grow to be a family (Israel and his sons.. who grew to be a nation, Israel, with 12 tribes
From that nation, God choose a king, David
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
c. God was keeping an even older promise:
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Jesus had to be seed of woman and a descendant of David.
God foretold it and brought it to pass!
Jesus was born exactly where and when He should be.
His anointing
His anointing
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
God’s Holy Spirit will rest on the Messiah, giving him unlimited power and wisdom.
Just as the Spirit of the Lord came upon David when he was anointed king, He will rest upon David’s descendant, Christ, who will rule the world.
Jesus is the 2nd person of the trinity.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit
Messiah created the world and holds it together
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Spirit imparted qualities:
wisdom and understanding
counsel and might
knowledge and fear of the Lord.
His Spirit imparted qualifications enable Him to rule justly and effectively.
Holman Concise Bible Commentary Deliverance through Messiah (7:1–12:6)
Energized by the Lord’s Spirit, this King would possess wisdom, executive ability, and loyalty to the Lord, all of which are necessary to rule in a just and effective manner.
He, as God, rules 100% justly!
His administration
His administration
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
His reign will be just and righteous as He defends the helpless and defeats the wicked.
Since He is God, He is perfect!
He judges based on absolute truth, not based on appearance and persuasive words.
Pretty faces and and pretty words will not sway Jesus
He will be absolutely just!
Every decision will be right and leave no room for criticism and second guessing.
His accomplishments
His accomplishments
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.
They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.
In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea.
He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and those who harass Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west, and together they shall plunder the people of the east. They shall put out their hand against Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites shall obey them.
And the Lord will utterly destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt, and will wave his hand over the River with his scorching breath, and strike it into seven channels, and he will lead people across in sandals.
And there will be a highway from Assyria for the remnant that remains of his people, as there was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
The description of the coming Earthly Kingdom demonstrate that it has hyet to be fulfilled
a. some see them as not literal. They make it all figurative and force the details to mean things that already happened or just metaphors of “the times”
b. Others see these as literal descriptions of a yet future time.
I see no reason to see this text as anything but literal.

Conclusion:
Conclusion:
God is a good and just God
Whenever we study passages like this there are two impactful things.
God will carry out His plan
Jesus will return to Earth and rule as literal king of Kings
Justice will prevail under His reign
Peace will come under Him
between all lands and animals
This gives us hope!
It is what people want!
But there is more than the just the sweet by and by for us!
We should live for Him today
While we await His return, we should live for him every day
Our home in eternity is secured by grace through faith.
Yet we live for Him every day to honor Him and bring others to Him.
