“‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”

Text

Psalm 91:1–16 NKJV
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. 5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. 8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, 10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. 13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. 14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. 15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”

The Secret Place of the Most High

When you read Psalms like this, it’s important to visualize the image that is being spoken.
Psalm 91:1 NKJV
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
God is a Spirit, and cannot cast a shadow. So we understand that this isn’t literally a shadow. What it means is that we should live our lives in a position of being UNDER God.
If we remain a nation “under God”, we will remain under His covering. But if we keep trying to be God and get above God and away from God and even remove the phrase “under God” from the picture… He’ll remove that protection.
You better make sure your life is “under God.”
And so, this is how we read and understand Scripture. And Psalm 91 is demonstrating the great need we have for a secret place in our lives where we encounter God.

God Is Our Shelter

Something I’ll note is that the psalmist uses forms of buildings to talk about God’s protection.
Words like refuge and fortress (91:2) and habitation (91:9) are used. Although these are all slightly different, they are all places that a person might LIVE IN.
The idea is that God’s dwelling place is not just a place where a person might go to, but a place where they can LIVE.

God Is Our Hiding Place

Now, about this “hiding place”...
The idea of God being compared to a hiding place, or as one who hides us, can be found in many other psalms. I’ve noted it in Psalms 17, 27, 32, 64, 68, 119.
And we read about wings giving shelter:
Psalm 91:4 NKJV
4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
You might think about the shelter that a mother bird provides for her babies.

I Will Hide Myself In The Lord Through Prayer

“Where do I go to find this hiding place, this shelter? How do I get there???”
The absolute ONLY way that you create a secret and sacred place with God… IS THROUGH PRAYER.
PRAYER is a place of freedom and liberation where we can express ourselves to God openly and honestly! It’s a secret and sacred place where we can authentically share our deepest hurts, greatest longings, and worst fears.
There is a need in this hour for men and women of prayer to take their rightful place in the Kingdom!
You are going to get tired of hearing this preacher push prayer!

We Can Trust God

There’s that song: “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”. And there’s a depth to that song.
Many of us spend hours of our day sitting because we trust the chair to support us. If we didn’t trust the chair, we most likely wouldn’t ever sit down. Therefore, whatever we trust in is where we place our lives. When we trust Jesus, we commit our whole lives into His care.
