Introduction
Two years ago TODAY, I sent an email from our Los Angeles Church partner’s offices to cancel church with the impending pandemic, COVID-19.
Looking back on that email, I have noticed several things.
We had no clue what the next two years would hold for us.
A Pandemic
Civil Unrest
A New Way of Life for Everyone
Huge changes to business, civil, and pastoral ways of thinking.
I have seen people respond in some very positive ways, and I have also seen people respond in some very negative ways.
One response that I have seen as much as any response - FEAR.
People have become more afraid of the things around them.
When we think about Ukraine, gas prices, sickness, inflation, family problems, and the state of morality in our world, it can be difficult not to be anxious, fearful, or scared.
Corrie Ten Boom // Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear.
CIT: We can take comfort in the fact that Christ has conquered all.
Explanation
Ephesians 1:20 “that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places,”
God’s might and power is fully displayed in Christ’s resurrection and ascension.
God’s power is displayed in Christ’s resurrection.
God’s power is displayed in Christ’s ascension.
Death was not only slightly defeated, but it was obliterated.
Christ not only came away from death unscathed, but sits beside the Father awaiting the day that He will conquer death forever.
Jesus conquered death, but He also defeated death.
I have preached funerals this year for those who struggled with long term illness, those who died suddenly, unborn children and everything in between.
Jesus has the final word.
Ephesians 1:21 “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
Christ is far above every rule and authority and power and dominion.
People debate all the time whether Michael Jordan or Lebron James is the best player of all time.
Both sides have valid points.
Joe Montana, Tom Brady, John Elway, Drew Brees, John Elway, etc. Which is the best quarterback of all time?
We could argue for awhile based off of different stats or seasons or circumstances.
Christ has no near equal.
Christ isn’t barely stronger than Satan.
Christ is Creator.
There will be no one at the end of time when Christ returns for his value.
The name of Christ has no equal.
Some names just have single name recognition.
Obama, Putin, Trump, Cher, Springsteen, Beyonce, Caesar.
No name will even compare to Jesus’ name.
His name will outshine every name that is and was and will be.
We live in a fear-based society.
Anxiety and fear are everywhere.
WE can have confidence that God is still on his throne.
Our hope isn’t in our family.
Our hope isn’t in Washington D. C.
Our hope isn’t in NATO.
Our hope is in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Even spiritual forces have been made subject to Christ.
Ephesians 1:22-23 “And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.”
1. Can a Got who is this big actually love me?
2. Christ loves you so much that you are considered his “fullness.”
a.
This does not mean that Christ was lacking in anything.
b.
It does mean that Christ has a great opinion of how much He loves you.
c.
Just as a bride and groom become one, so Christ and His church become one.
3. When you think of Christ, think of how far you would go for your spouse, your other half.
That is what Christ is willing to do for you.
When you think of the Father, know what Christ would do to care for you.
Invitation
Believe in the gospel
Give your life to Jesus.
Trust in him for salvation.
Return to him and no longer be a slave to fear.
