This pericope may appear out of place in Jesus’ sermon.

However, the entire sermon is rooted in the Shema and the Old Testament.

Hypocritical Judgement of Others(vs. 1-2 & 5)

God hates hypocrisy!

Matthew 2:7-12 & 23:13-33

It is not hypocritical to see the sins of others. It is hypocritical to see their sins and not our own. (vs. 15-23)

Honest Judgement of Ourselves (vs. 3-4)

Each one of us have a speck in our own eyes. (vs. 11)

The point of judgement is to bring healing.

Holy Judgement of Everyone

Jesus Christ is the perfect judge. (v.19-23)
