I Know Whom I Have Believed!

2nd Timothy 1:3-13

            The words of Paul are refreshing in this age of uncertainty.  Especially when we find ourselves completely unable to control the events of our lives.  This passage begins a series of strong charges – charges directed to Timothy but applicable to us as well. 

1. Stir up the gift of God.  The gifts that enable believers to minister should be kept blazing hot.  Keep stirring them up.
2. Do not fear.  Too often we fear using our gifts lest we invite persecution.
1. Ridicule
2. Embarrassment
3. Criticism
3. Do not be ashamed of the Gospel or of your fellow Christians.
4. Share the sufferings of the Gospel.
5. Follow Paul’s example of faith.

I.  Look At Paul’s Confidence

A.     Putting all his eggs in one basket, Paul elected to dive into the deep water head first

1.      His body had suffered stoning, snakebite, shipwreck, and ultimately the headsman’s axe

2.      His character and reputation – spurned by those he loved most (peers)

3.      His whole life’s work – gave up a promising career as rabbi and philosopher

4.      His comfort and peace – a constant war within himself.  The only member of his family that believed.

B.     Paul redefined the argument - The issue is not man’s ability but the ability of Jesus do all He has promised

1.      Can and will He keep us safe?

2.      Is our salvation definite?

II.                 How Assurance Can Influence Life

A.     Gives us peace concerning our soul.

1.      Not my responsibility to hold to Christ

2.      No worries concerning the world’s opinion – what do they matter?

B.     Gives courage in the face of doubt

Using his superior intelligence, Paul worked it all out.  He was confident that his effort was not going to be wasted.  Not even death could steal his faith and hope for both were based on an eternal truth – the person of Jesus!
