Introduction
45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink.
49 But the rest of them said, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him.”
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
We know about the nails, we know about the beating, we know about the pain inflicted on our lord, but what about the final moments he had?
What have we missed?
Why does Jesus Cry out that God forsook him?
I see here three OT references/allusions we will examine
I. Darkness
I. Darkness
What was this darkness?
It was not an eclipse
It was not a storm
This darkness was miraculous darkness from God
The darkness was a fulfillment of prophecy
9 “It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God, “That I will make the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight.
10 “Then I will turn your festivals into mourning And all your songs into lamentation; And I will bring sackcloth on everyone’s loins And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
Amos is speaking of a day of Judgement that will lead to redemption of the People
A punishment for their deeds (v. 7)
The darkness was a sign of judgment
Throughout the OT darkness is associated with judgment
31 “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
30 “Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
God brought darkness to show his Judgement of Sin in Christ
10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
God judged YOUR sins in Christ on the Cross.
He Judged Jesus, so that you might escape Judgement in him
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
He condemned Christ on the cross, so that there would be no condemnation in those who are in Christ Jesus
When darkness fell on Calvary that day, it brought the judgment of God with it, not for anything Jesus had done, but for everything you have done.
II. Despair
II. Despair
Jesus cried out with a loud voice: My God My God why have you forsaken me?
Now, this makes us uncomfortable.
We don't like the idea of God forsaking anyone, let alone his own Son.
We have made up theories to lessen the impact of this verse.
One is that this quotation, being from Psalm 22:1, would have been common for a holy man to quote such a psalm before death.
Another theory, which i think holds more truth would be that for Jesus to quote the first verse would be like him quoting all of it.
While that may be true, it still does not answer why he quoted that particular verse. There were 149 other Psalms he could have chosen from, WHY THIS ONE?
ANSWER: BECAUSE HE FELT FORSAKEN BY THE FATHER IN THAT MOMENT.
WHY? because he was bearing the sins of the whole world in that moment.
This is one of the things we might miss if we read it too quickly.
Lets paint the whole picture
Christ the innocent Son of God, blameless
Has been arrested, nails driven through his hands and feet to a splintered cross
He fights to get a breath
He is suffering Physically beyond anything we can imagine.
YET, he says nothing according to Matthew’s gospel.
THEN THERE IS THIS MOMENT when suddenly the son of God CRIES out
MY GOD MY GOD WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?!
He was quiet during physical pain, but the pain of the sins of the world fell upon him
He was crushed. He felt the weight of sin. (Isa 53:10)
Why did he bare our sins?
21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
So that he would be a propitiation for us.
He would be the lamb slain for us
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
He bore our sins. He bore your sins on that day.
NOW, why did he cry out then?
Because he was bearing the sins of the whole world.
During that moment he felt a separation from the Father that he never had.
Literally in the cross that day the Trinity was torn apart!
Sin had touched the Holy one of God.
The people laugh at him and mocked him using the scriptures
43 “He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
8 “Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him; Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.”
This is then why Jesus cries out in such a way.
They quoted psalm 22 at him, so he quoted it back
and meant it too!
1 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.
Do you feel the pain in those words?
HE was separated from the father so that we can be reconciled to the Father!
11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
III. Death
III. Death
When he cried out these words, they began to mock him thinking he was crying out for Elijah.
Immediately they took sour wine and gave it to him
This fufills Psalm 69:21
21 They also gave me gall for my food And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
They continued to mock him (49)
Then he cried out again and yielded up His spirit.
He was judged so that you are not.
He was separated so that you are not.
He died so that you would not.
Conclusion
The death of Christ makes us uncomfortable, the cross makes us uncomfortable
