DEFINITION:
ADOPTION - is the act of God that places the believer in His Family as an adult.
ADOPTION - is the divine work wherein God declares regenerated believers to be his beloved sons and daughters and welcome them into his eternal family. Romans 8:14 - 16
ADOPTION IN THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST An act by which a man or woman acknowledges a person of different blood as his or her son or daughter and bestows on that person the legal rights and duties of a true child.
ILLUSTRATION:
Republic Act No. 8552 ARTICLE V
EFFECTS OF ADOPTION
Section 16. Parental Authority. – Except in cases where the biological parent is the spouse of the adopter, all legal ties between the biological parent(s) and the adoptee shall be severed and the same shall then be vested on the adopter(s).
Section 17. Legitimacy. – The adoptee shall be considered the legitimate son/daughter of the adopter(s) for all intents and purposes and as such is entitled to all the rights and obligations provided by law to legitimate sons/daughters born to them without discrimination of any kind. To this end, the adoptee is entitled to love, guidance, and support in keeping with the means of the family.
Section 18. Succession. – In legal and intestate succession, the adopter(s) and the adoptee shall have reciprocal rights of succession without distinction from legitimate filiation. However, if the adoptee and his/her biological parent(s) had left a will, the law on testamentary succession shall govern.
ADOPTION Legal process whereby one person receives another into his family and confers upon that person familial privileges and advantages. The “adopter” assumes parental responsibility for the “adoptee.” The “adoptee” is thereby considered an actual child, becoming the beneficiary of all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded to all the children of the family.
Therefore ADOPTION has both a vertical (with God) and a horizontal (with fellow believers) plane of impact on relationships.
AN ADOPTED CHILD OF GOD of God has been brought into a new community that is both spiritual and embodied in nature, established and empowered by the Spirit.
GOD’S WORK OF ADOPTION is both declarative (a new legal status is given to the believer) and personal (a change in relationship is experienced).
The adoption of believers as individuals. Why Adoption is Special?
This act of God was predestined Ephesians 1:5 (settle beforehand)
It was made possible by the death of Christ Galatians 4:5
It happen when we believed and become part of the family of God Romans 8:15
Yet it awaits its full realization until we receive resurrection bodies Romans 8:23
The Ramifications of Adoption. (
Adoption means placing us in a family to which we did not naturally belong Ephesians 2:3
Children of wrath become sons of God.
Adoption means complete freedom from former relationships, particulary to the Law Galatians 4:5
Adoption is possible only because of a voluntary act of the ONE doing the adopting. Before the foundation of the world God’s plan inclyded our adoption. Ephesians 1:5
Adoption means we have full rights to all the priviledge, but every believer has the right to them from moment of salvation on.
This is all true because of Christ’s redemtion Galatians 4:5
1 John 3:1-2
Finally, THE ADOPTION OF CHRISTIAN INTO GOD’S FAMILY also demands a change in the heart and lifestyle of the adopted son or daughter. As earthly children learn to imitate their parents, so spiritual children are taught to imitate their heavenly Father (Luke 6:36; Eph 5:1). God calls his adopted ones to a life of obedience, honoring their heavenly Father and welcoming his discipline as an expression of his love (Heb 12:5–11). The obedience and love of God’s children demonstrates his love and light to the rest of the world (Phil 2:14–16).
As Adopted Children
We are to Change in the the heart and lifestyle
We are Commanded to Imitate their Heavenly Father
We are Called to a life of obedience
We are Compel to honor our Heavenly Father
