The Promises are to the Offspring
The Promises are to the Offspring
Galatians 3:16 (ESV)
16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
Notice who the heir of the promises really and truly is.
Christ.
The true Israel of God is Christ.
It’s interesting to note that the promise had been made to the offspring who would come...
Who, Paul tells us is Christ.
When were the Promises made to the Offspring?
Was it initially expressed to Abraham?
Was it initially expressed to Adam & Eve in Gen. 3?
When was this promise made to Christ?
Titus 1:1–3 (ESV)
1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began [which biblically means before time eternal] 3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;
Who was around before the ages began?
Only God.
This is a Triune covenant made among the Trinity for the Son of God to be a blessing to the Nations...
To be the Savior of the world.
To be the King of a holy nation, a royal priesthood...
One made up of people from every tribe tongue and nation.
One made up of a people who all know God.
One made up of people who have been given a heart of flesh in place of the heart of stone (heart circumcision)...
With the moral law of God written on their hearts.
With a love for God written on their hearts.
One made up of people who have all had every single sin atoned for and , hence, forgiven.
Did He do it?
Did He keep the promise?
Did the Son fulfill His mission?
John 17:1–5 (ESV)
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
John 19:28–30 (ESV)
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The Promises to Abraham Were Meant to Point Towards Someone.
The Promises to Abraham Were Meant to Point Towards Someone.
Galatians 3:16 (ESV)
16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
The promises given to Abraham were pointing to Jesus.
The Covenant of Grace was pointing to Jesus.
The true Inheritor of the Promises to Abraham is Jesus.
All the promises of God in the Covenant of Grace...
The promises given, in more detail, to Abraham...
Are given to and inherited by the Offspring, who is Jesus.
We lay hold of those promises by faith in the Offspring.
Abraham had faith in God, that the Promised Offspring would come...
He believed God and it was counted to Abraham as righteousness.
Jesus said that Abraham saw Jesus’ day and he rejoiced.
And, through faith and only through faith, do we lay hold of the promises, as well.
By faith, we have been adopted into the family of God...
And made joint heirs with Jesus.
Now, not only do the promises to Abraham...
The Abrahamic covenant...
The Covenant of Grace point to Jesus...
Not only does the Law of Moses point to Jesus...
All of Scripture Points to Jesus
All of Scripture Points to Jesus
This is how Jesus was able to take the disciples and teach them how the OT was about Him.
Because all of the Law, all of the Prophets...
All of the Covenants were pointing to Jesus.
And, let me add...
And, let me add...
Our life is meant to point to Jesus.
Our hope is meant to point to Jesus.
Every thing we do is meant to point to Jesus.
Let everything that has breath…Praise the Lord!
Romans 11:36 (ESV)
36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
