Rock and Sand 03-20-2022
Welcome
Intro -
Last we talked about the Parable of light and salt
We learned and challenged you to effect your surrounds for Christ
That is what light and salt do
Hence we are to be light to a dark world
This morning we dive into another parable of Jesus
Matthew 7:24–29 NASB95
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” 28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
Jesus is about to finish His sermon on the mount with this
That there is a difference in the foundations
Jesus uses the examples of Rock and Sand
Jesus may have not been a stone worker but He was a carpenter and understood the importance things being sturdy and how to sure things up
Jesus also understood as a carpenter that the most important part of the building is the foundation
It doesn’t matter how good or solid your building is without a sturdy and solid foundation it will fall
I found this in an article about some of the worlds tallest sky scrappers
For some of them they dig some 85 meters down that is which is 278 feet
Most of those sky scrappers put their foundation on bedrock
Which is drilled into
A lot of thought and planning go into the foundation of the building because without it there would be no building
Are you starting to understand how important the foundation in building is
As you can guess Jesus was not talking about a physical building but rather a Spiritual Life
What is your foundation for your Spiritual Life?
Is it sand that gives way when pressure is applied
Or is it rock that is able to withstand pressure
James 1:22–25 NASB95
22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
How foundation is determined on our obedience to the Word of God
Jesus said that everyone who hears His words and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on a foundation
Lets make this simple this morning church
And some of you will say after that I stepped on your toes and to that I will say I missed then cause I was aiming for your heart
Those who simply show up to church and Sunday school and Bible Study and hear the word of God but do not leave changed are like the people who look in a mirror and forget what they look like
THey are the people who build their house on sand
They show up to church and hear the same message but do nothing with it
It’s as if they show up just for show
Like they want everyone to know how spiritual they are
I believe Jesus called the Pharisees white washed tombs
All good on the outside but full of the death on the inside
And let me clear maybe that is you this morning
There are others that show up to church, to Sunday School, and to Bible Study and leave changed
Not the outside but the inside is changed
They hear the same message everyone else has heard but they begin to apply it to their own lives
Jesus said these people are those who build their houses on solid Rock foundations church
So again I ask where is your house built
And be honest with yourself this morning
IF you foundation is on the sand we have a mover who if you are willing to be obedient can help you move your house to a solid foundation
Church our foundation is found no where other than Christ Himself
1 Corinthians 3:11 NASB95
11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Church there is no foundation other than Christ
For far to long the church has allowed people to come and simply sit and listen and then require nothing
WE have allowed people to simply come and be
The Word of God says that we are to be fruit inspectors
That we will know what our foundation is if we are obedient or not
So church let me ask this
What is your foundation
What have you built your life on
CLOSING
As the Band comes forward
Be honest with yourself this morning
Maybe you are here and you have been that person who for far to long have come and simply sat and listen and never acted on the words you hear
I would invite you this morning to the front to repent and begin to act on the words you hear this morning and allow Jesus to help you move your house
Or maybe you are here this morning and you have never trusted JEsus to be lord of YOur life
I would invite you to the front to speak with someone about salvation this morning
Or maybe you simple need to spend sometime in prayer this morning
The altar is open
