Introduction:

1. Why is giving so important?

A. It supports the work of the Lord that we are to be abounding in.

1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

1. Evangelism

2. Benevolence

3. Electricity (keeping the lights on)

4. Church related events such as Lectureships, Gospel Meetings, Vacation Bible School (VBS).

5. Supplies for services (Worship).

6. Supplies for Bible Class.

7. Cleaning Supplies

8. Building Maintenance

9. Church van Maintenance

10. Grounds Maintenance

11. Technology

12. Ministers Salary

2. What do all these things have in common?

A. They all have a cost.

2. The Old Testament was written for our learning.

Galatians 3:24 NKJV
24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Romans 15:4 NKJV
4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
1 Corinthians 10:1–11 NKJV
1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

A. The Law is not binding on us but we can learn from it.

Colossians 2:13–14 NKJV
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

1. The reason we can learn from the old testament is God never changes.

Hebrews 13:8 NKJV
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

A. Therefore even though God’s law changes we can learn who He is from the Law.

Hebrews 8:13 NKJV
13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
1. Though the law is dead because it was nailed to the cross it was a shadow of what God expects from the new testament Christian.
Colossians 2:13–17 NKJV
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. 16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Body:

1. Does God care how we give?

A. Did God care how the children of Israel gave?

1. First we are going to examine how they gave.

A. Was the children of Israel’s animal sacrifices a part of their giving?

Exodus 13:11–12 NKJV
11 “And it shall be, when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 that you shall set apart to the Lord all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the Lord’s.
1. Notice the wording set apart to the Lord.
A. This means they are sanctified or set apart to the Lord.

B. Were Israel’s firstborn children a part of their giving to the Lord.

Exodus 13:1–2 NKJV
1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.”
1. God modified this law in Numbers 3:12-13 to be the tribe of the Levites instead of every firstborn.
Numbers 3:12–13 NKJV
12 “Now behold, I Myself have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the children of Israel. Therefore the Levites shall be Mine, 13 because all the firstborn are Mine. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They shall be Mine: I am the Lord.”
A. Exodus 13:1-2 notice the word consecrate this means the same as set apart which mean it is sanctified to the Lord.
B. Numbers 3:12-13 notice the word sanctified which means set apart or consecrated.

C. Was Israel’s livelihood part of their giving to the Lord?

Leviticus 27:30 NKJV
30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the Lord.
1. The tithes went to the Levites to support their work.
Numbers 18:21 NKJV
21 “Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting.

2. Secondly, did God care if they gave?.

A. God told Israel if they did not give they robbed Him.

Malachi 3:8 NKJV
8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.
1. Did God care how they gave?
Malachi 3:9 NKJV
9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation.
2. If Israel bring the tithes he will take care of them more than they will understand.
Malachi 3:10 NKJV
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.

Conclusion:

A. Is sacrifice a part of our giving?
