03 Easter 2022 – Questioning HIS authority (Power, Authority Hypocrisy)
Matthew 21:23 – 22:46
In these Scriptures, Jesus declares Who HE is, who they are, and why a Saviour is needed.
They had now drawn nigh to Jerusalem (21:1), Jesus had entered riding upon the colt of an ass, the people had welcomed Him as a King, the chief priest and scribes having rejected Him, He left them and went to lodge in Bethany. Which brings us to 21:23, where Jesus returns to the Temple.
Matthew 21:23-46
V.23 There it is, the BIG question - By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? The things being referred too are see in Matthew 21:12-15 – turning over tables, healing the blind and the lame, and receiving the praise of the people.
By His actions HE has declared His authority as the Son of God, but they are unable to answer His question thus HE rejects theirs and moves on to a parable that HE might point out to them exactly who they are.
V.28-32 – Jesus exposes their hypocrisy.
However, one parable would not drive home His point well enough therefore He offered a second.
V.33-46
The end result being – “they sought to lay hands on Him” but because they fear the multitude they chose not too – therefore the Lord seized the opportunity to present to the yet a 3rdparable.
Matthew 22:1-14 – A 3rd parable
V.23 – Jesus’ deal with the Sadducees.
V.34 – The Pharisees join forces with the Sadducees.
I close with a series of questions:
If you listened to the parables, in them you will see the lostness of the people – they need a Saviour.
· Do you recognize God’s authority over your life?
· Have you gone and done the work the Father sent you to do?
· Do you understand what GOD will ultimately do to those who have rejected HIS Son?
· Have you too rejected the Lord’s invitation to His wedding?
· Whose image do you bear, the worlds or the image of GOD?
· Do you know the Scriptures, do you know the power of God?
Jesus is on a journey to the cross for the purpose of glorifying the Father in dying for your sins.
The final verse in chapter 22 read -
V.46 – “And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.” It’s settled, Jesus must die. No more debates, no more arguments.
That was their decision, what’s yours, Crucify Him because He’s a hindrance to your lifestyle OR submit to HIM because He’s GOD?
