Nicodemus coming to speak to Jesus

Notes
Transcript
John 3:1 (NASB95) — 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;

758 ἄρχων [archon /ar·khone/] n m. Present participle of 757; TDNT 1:488; TDNTA 81; GK 807; 37 occurrences; AV translates as “ruler” 22 times, “prince” 11 times, “chief” twice, “magistrate” once, and “chief ruler” once. 1 a ruler, commander, chief, leader.

Nicodemus’ name means Conqueror, and probably for good reason. this is the first of three times that we will meet Nicodemus. The first time in the Light and the third time as a righteous man.
SANHEDRIN (Greek συνέδριον, synedrion; Hebrew סַנְהֶדְרִין, sanhedrin). The supreme council in charge of Jewish affairs in Roman Palestine. they were a body of 70 members with sway in influence over the Jewish people and was responsible under the Roman dictatorship to keep law and order over the Jews. They met to decide on legal matters with religious, political and social ramifications.
Nicodemus was a man who had, wealth, legal muscle and at this time respect among his peers.

9:4; 11:10; 13:30; 19:39)

During the week of feast of unleavened bread after the passover, seems as though the fame of Jesus was growing quickly. The crowd was going. though the details of this early ministry is left of John’s writings, John would write that if every thing that Jesus Said and did could be written down, there would not be enough books to contain it.
Jesus had captured the attention of the leadership. And early on in His ministry became a growing threat that the concerned council knew that they were going to have to deal with.
John 3:2 (NASB95) — 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
John does not give us reason for Nicodemus coming by night but in darkness John has covered a number of times that darkness is where evil deeds are hidden.
John 3:19 (NASB95) — 19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
John 9:4 (NASB95) — 4 “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
John 11:10 (NASB95) — 10 “But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
John 13:29–30 (NASB95) — 29 For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of for the feast”; or else, that he should give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night.
John 19:39 (NASB95) — 39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.
The Leader approaches Jesus in the still of the night, and whatever his intention now there can be a private conversation between the two of the them.
John 3:2 (NASB95) — 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Nicodemus starts with a little flattery, a little pleasantry in order to start the conversation. This would be the M.O. of most snakes. Here is an unbeliever, He has either witnessed the signs himself or have heard the rumors of what Jesus had been doing and word getting around. At this point and early in his ministry Nicodemus along with rest of the leaders probably thought that this one could be easily exposed arrested disgraced and maybe if setting himself up as prophet found to be false and put to death. But Nicodemus will be the first to comes to realize that as knowledgeable as they all were, individually and collectively, they were no match for the Logos, the word, Jesus.
John 3:3 (NASB95) — 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
There may have been some dialogue between lines, but John picks up with the words of Jesus in reference to the Kingdom of God.

ἀμήν [amen /am·ane/]

281 ἀμήν [amen /am·ane/] particle indeclinable. Of Hebrew origin 543; TDNT 1:335; TDNTA 53; GK 297; 152 occurrences; AV translates as “verily” 101 times, and “amen” 51 times. 1 firm. 1A metaph. faithful. 2 verily, amen. 2A at the beginning of a discourse—surely, truly, of a truth. 2B at the end—so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled. It was a custom, which passed over from the synagogues to the Christian assemblies, that when he who had read or discoursed, had offered up solemn prayer to God, the others responded Amen, and thus made the substance of what was uttered their own. Additional Information: The word “amen” is a most remarkable word. It was transliterated directly from the Hebrew into the Greek of the New Testament, then into Latin and into English and many other languages, so that it is practically a universal word. It has been called the best known word in human speech. The word is directly related—in fact, almost identical—to the Hebrew word for “believe” (amam), or faithful. Thus, it came to mean “sure” or “truly”, an expression of absolute trust and confidence.—HMM.

Amen Amen verily truly so let it be. What is it for the Son of God to say this word Amen the most universally spoken word in the world? that is Jesus who is God, Absolute infinite and eternal truth begins a statement with laying down that absolute authority. The Amen adds emphasis and marks the statement as a dogmatic statement of face.
unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Literally Born from above
Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 509 ἄνωθεν

509 ἄνωθεν [anothen /an·o·then/] adv. From 507; TDNT 1:378; TDNTA 63; GK 540; 13 occurrences; AV translates as “from above” five times, “top” three times, “again” twice, “from the first” once, “from the beginning” once, and not translated once. 1 from above, from a higher place. 1A of things which come from heaven or God. 2 from the first, from the beginning, from the very first. 3 anew, over again.

Being born from above is the qualifier to live with God forever in His Kingdom.
2 Peter 3:13–14 (NASB95) — 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless,
Our first birth from Adam which is connected to the cursed earth
the first man and the corporate head of the Human race was named

The word for ground is
Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 127 אֲדָמָה, אֲדָמָה

אֲדָמָה [ʾadamah /ad·aw·maw/]

And what does the Lord tell Adam after the fall
Genesis 3:17–19 (NASB95) — 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”
Adam and his progeny are connected with the earth which is in itself cursed.
In Adam all die
Very important, we are not sinners because we commit sin. we commit sins because were born sinners. Our first birth brought Adam’s curse. We are in Adam and we were spiritually still born.
Man was created as a triunity. His creation along with the universe reflects a triunity.
The universe is a triunity
Time
Space
matter
Each of these are a triunity
Time
1. past
2. present
3. Future
Space
Height
width
depth
matter
Gas
Solid
Liquid
the triunity of creation is a reflection of the triunity of God
1.Father
2. Son
3. Spirit
Man who was made in the image of God was made as a trinity as well.
Body
Soul
Spirit
The Body house the immaterial part of man It is equipped with the bio life to support the body
There is the Soul with soul life the Nashama where we have
Mentality
self awareness
conscience
personality
sensibility
the soul is eternal. It was given soul life and it will remain forever.
the Soul connects the person to His environment and with other souls
There is the spirit which is the relational part of man. It connects man with His God.
when Adam Sinned against God the spirit died. and thus so did the relationship with God. Man became a dysfunctional being. Possessing a body and a soul but no spirit which connected him with his God.
This would be also with the children of Adam
Genesis 5:1–3 (NASB95) — 1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
Romans 5:12 (NASB95) — 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
The best of us and the worst of us are born into a world that is universally lost. Dis functional creatures.
So whatever the conversation was that lead up to the statement of Jesus Nicodemus was on the losing side.
John 3:3 (NASB95) — 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
The term for rebirth is regeneration which is bringing that which was formal dead back to life. it is life given to a dead spirit making one whole before God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB95) — 17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
To see is to be partakers in the coming Kingdom. And make no mistake, it will come. Maybe this took place some two thousand years ago and we might think that the kingdom is ever going to come, but it will be one particular generation of man that the Kingdom will be established and what God had purposed from the beginning will come to its completion.
At that point there will be a final Judgement. that is after the Christ. that all that does meet the standard of righteousness approving of God, that Is possessing God’s righteousness will be cast into eternal judgment. those in the lake will never have cast their eyes upon That which God had prepared for those who love Him.
