A Preacher can make profound statements and teach some good principles in any direction or any given way we want to take born of Water and spirit.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (3:5)
3:5. Various views are given to explain Jesus’ words about being born of water and the Spirit:
1. The “water” refers to the natural birth, and the “Spirit” to the birth from above.
Man parallels the journey of this earth.
2 Peter 3:5–6 (NASB95) — 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.
we can go back to the beginning where God is creating the earth and point out the parallel.
Genesis 1:2 (NASB95) — 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
It stands to reason that if one is born again he must have been born the first time. Keeping in context with Nicodemus’s statement of having returned to His mothers’ womb.
We might consider the resurrection, if one had never the body what would be resurrected which we all will one day be to be called to be with the Lord forever.
as the world was born out of water, so is man born out of water in reference to the amniotic sac which houses the fetus.
the question however is proposed by Beka is, Why then does not Luke include this narrative?
2. The “water” refers to the Word of God (Eph. 5:26).
Ephesians 5:26 (NASB95) — 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
3. The “water” refers to baptism as an essential part of regeneration. (This view contradicts other Bible verses that make it clear that salvation is by faith alone; e.g., John 3:16, 36; Eph. 2:8–9; Titus 3:5.) (4) The “water” is a symbol of the Holy Spirit (John 7:37–39). (5) The “water” refers to the repentance ministry of John the Baptist, and the “Spirit” refers to the application by the Holy Spirit of Christ to an individual. The fifth view has the merit of historical propriety as well as theological acceptability. John the Baptist had stirred the nation by his ministry and stress on repentance (Matt. 3:1–6). “Water” would remind Nicodemus of the Baptist’s emphasis. So Jesus was saying that Nicodemus, in order to enter the kingdom, needed to turn to Him (repent) in order to be regenerated by the Holy Spirit.
Is it Physical birth which would seem to be in context. On must have a Body. one must have had the first birth, or what can be resurrected?

Is it symbolic or figurative. what would go through the mind of the expert of the Law?
So while we shake our heads and say. “Sure! that makes sense.” Is it moreso cleansing?
After all if we are talking about physical birth here, why doesn’t Dr. Luke pick up on this narrative.
Now, You are saying, “no! can’t be physical birth.
If you are a Baptist, You are all over water baptism.
Baptism ritual may be figurative as John’s baptism was about repentance. the washing away of sin. Washing throughout the old testament is about cleansing and it is that water is a Judgment which is the dealing with the sin issue. It is purification from sin and sin has to be judged.
Ezekiel 36:25–29 (NASB95) — 25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. 28 “You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God. 29 “Moreover, I will save you from all your uncleanness; and I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I will not bring a famine on you.
One can not enter into the Kingdom until his sin dept is paid.
Well that sounds reasonable as well.
Could be that Water and spirit are the same thing. Using two words or ideas to bring to mind one idea or image. Such as Pastor and Teacher is referring to one person.
Could it be both? or neither? and are there others ideas of what Jesus meant by water?
so what is it?
It is hard to lean to one direction or the other. Am I concerned that I am not truly saved because I might have somehow missed out on being born of water?
NO.
The Lord provided that which was needed to bring me into being a new Creature in Christ.
by time we drop down to verse 8 it is only the spirit of God which is in play.
it is the spirit who is the power of regeneration bringing life to the Human spirit which connects one to a relationship with His and Her God.
Spiritual birth does refer to Regeneration which is to bring alive that which was formally dead making the believer whole possessing a Body and soul and a human spirit that is connected to His Lord. being born again takes a person out of the kingdom of darkness and brings them into the Kingdom of light.
John 3:7 (NASB95) — 7 “Do not be amazed (wonder in ignorance, or havy your mind blown over the concept) that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
John 3:8 (NASB95) — 8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
From the beginning we see the spirit brooding over the waters that covered the earth.
Genesis 1:2 (NASB95) — 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
The spirit here is רוּחַ [ruwach /roo·akh/] n some translators translates it as wind and some the spirit of God.
In Acts there is the spirit that comes rushing in like a wind

4157 πνοή [pnoe /pno·ay/] n f. From 4154; TDNT 6:453; TDNTA 876; GK 4466; Two occurrences; AV translates as “wind” once, and “breath” once. 1 breath, breath of life. 2 wind.

Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 4151 πνεῦμα

4151 πνεῦμα [pneuma /pnyoo·mah/] n

is the word for spirit
The response of the Gospel has always been a great mystery to me. It is far beyond an intellectual assent. there is no demographics. there are nothing you can point to any one person and say that he believes because or she believes for this reason. a genus has much of a chance of dismissing the gospel as he does accepting it. while I might be amazed it brings me to the understanding that there is an outside influence which is the one who is doing the work in touching lives and opening eyes of the hearts, and with out the work of the spirit, there is no regeneration not birth from above.
John 3:9–10 (NASB95) — 9 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?
Hard rebuke from Jesus. Who at this point is the teacher and who is the student?
Does Nicodemus feel the condescension? The teacher is use to more respect than this. Is Nicodemus starting to question what he does know and don’t know. I think he is and I believe that Nicodemus will spend much time weighing the things that Jesus had taught the teacher that night.
John 3:11 (NASB95) — 11 “Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony.
Amen Amen
who are the we and the our?
I will say, the words of the Prophets as Jesus is including himself as one.
Luke 13:34–35 (NASB95) — 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! 35 “Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”
