Thief Disguised As a Doctor
“When an English robber called Captain Thunderbolt escaped the law and moved to the eastern US in 1818, he began practicing medicine. He took on the name Dr. John Wilson. Often he wore three suits of clothes to escape recognition by making himself look larger and covering up a deformed leg. Just before the man died, he asked his friends to bury him without removing his clothes. But to prepare his body for proper burial, that request could not be honored. The mortician was surprised to find scars from wounds and a withered leg. A search of “Dr. Wilson’s” house revealed a stash of watches, jewelry, and diamonds. The sheriff learned that the doctor was in fact Thunderbolt, a thief in disguise.”
Jesus warns us about thieves in disguises that are trying to rob something that is more precious than any watch, jewelry, or diamond; The souls of man. As we conclude our Rescue series, we are going to see Jesus proclaim that He is the one who came to save us from these thieves and robbers. If you have your bible, please turn with me to John 10 as we hear God’s Word and answer the following questions;
Who are the thieves and robbers?
How do they try to steal the souls of man?
How does Jesus protect us from them?
***Give some context of what happened prior to this chapter.***
“Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers.” Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
Jesus said again, “Truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
(Prayer)
Be On Guard:
Be On Guard:
The opening portion of this scripture, Jesus makes it clear that we need to be on guard from thieves and robbers.
Thief- A person who steals, especially secretly or without open force.
(Example: Stealing Furby Keychain at K-Mart)
Robber-Takes something from someone by unlawful force or threat of violence.
(Example: Bully Taking Someones Lunch Money)
We are called to be on guard by thieves and robbers who try to destroy the church.
“Be on your guard against false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves.
Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.
“You know what is false by studying the truth.”
(Example: Bankers Training)
“Federal agents don’t learn to spot counterfeit money by studying the counterfeits. They study genuine bills until they master the look of the real thing. Then when they see the bogus money they recognize it.”
What Are Thieves and Robbers After?
What Are Thieves and Robbers After?
A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
What are they trying to steal? Ultimately the souls man.
1.) Peace (When stolen becomes anxiety)
2.) Love (When stolen becomes hate)
3.) Joy (When stolen becomes depression)
4.) Identity (When stolen becomes confusion)
5.) Courage (When stolen becomes fear)
6.) Security (When stolen becomes brokenness)
7.) Hope (When stolen becomes despair)
8.) Freedom (When stolen becomes imprisonment)
“All of these are stolen because of the lies we have been sold by the enemy.”
(Personal Example: Fear)
Fear has caused me not to trust.
Fear has caused broken relationships.
Fear has caused me to quit.
Fear has caused me to question.
Fear has caused me to not walk by faith.
Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
The Shepherd:
The Shepherd:
Shepherd-A person who protects, guides, or watches over a person or a group of people.
“THE PERFECT SHEPHERD IS JESUS CHRIST!”
Jesus said again, “Truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.
Jesus Christ is the one who saves, protects, and guides us! That’s what salvation is!
Salvation-Deliverance from the power and effects from sin.
“Tonight, you can be delivered in the name of Jesus Christ!”
When you are anxious about the things of this world, you can find peace in Jesus Christ!
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
When you don’t feel loved, know that Jesus Christ loves you!
“As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.
When you don’t have joy, know that you can find joy in Jesus Christ!
Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them.
When you are confused about your identity, know that it is found in Jesus Christ!
I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
When you feel fearful, find courage in Jesus Christ!
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
When you feel broken, know that your security is found in Christ!
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
When you feel hopeless, know that hope can be found in Jesus Christ!
Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
You know longer have to be a prisoner to sin, but freedom can be found in Jesus Christ!
For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.
So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
