Intro

If you could go back home
You all dont realize it now but there may become a time when you will want to go back home
We talk about being home for the holidays
There are so many songs about hometowns
Especially country music
Listen to the beginnings of these songs
There is something nostalgic about going home
Something you all will realize later
One of the things that happens when you go home is everyone knows you
For better or worse you know people
You know places
You know everything about it its home
People i grew up with probably know me as someone different than who I am today
We will see the same thing happen to Jesus

Read Mark 6:1-6

Mark 6:1–6 ESV
1 He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.
This story stands in stark contrast to where we were just a few verses ago
Remeber Jesus has just healed someone with a twelve year affliction
He healed a man so demon possessed there was really no hope for him
He brought someone back from the dead
Now here he is in his hometown and he is a nobody again
He comes home from great crowds following him and he is now questioned
The question I ask is why would Mark put this story in here now
Why would he go from amazing Miracles
To Jesus being rejected
I think he intentionally uses this spot to compare and contrast what belief in Jesus looks like
Some takeaways I think he would want us to see is this
We can be amazed by Jesus’s teaching and still reject him
We can know who Jesus is and still reject him
We can see him do miracles and still reject Jesus

We can be amazed by his teaching and still reject Jesus

We can know Jesus and still reject him

Conclusion

Mark has put this book here
Read Acts 2:22-24
Acts 2:22–24 ESV
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
Acts 2:36–39 ESV
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
