11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
and I will walk in your truth;
give me an undivided heart,
that I may fear your name.
What stands out to you in this verse?
Is it the phrase “teach me?” That is a powerful phrase. We know that the Lord will teach us much if we place ourselves in the posture of a student. The Psalmist understands what happens to that student taught by God, he or she will walk in the truth of the Lord. In fact, every day should be a commencement ceremony.
10 Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.
3 for your love is ever before me,
and I walk continually in your truth.
What about the next phrase, “give me an undivided heart?” For me, that is what stands out in this verse. As I have seen snippets from the news about wars, politics, and even the hearings with a supreme court candidate, I am once again reminded of just how divided we are as a country and as a world. The reason that these divisions exist in my opinion are because so many of us have divided hearts.
What makes up a divided heart?
7 I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.
This tells me that a divided heart is one that does not follow God completely. This makes me think, what do I seek with my heart other that God?
Selfishness
Sinfulness
Sorry-ness
Stuff-ness
What are ways we can have an undivided heart? One is to pray for singleness of heart.
39 I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.
An undivided heart gives us a renewed spirit because there are no distractions.
19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.
What is the difference between a heart of stone and a heart of flesh?
35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.
I think undivided devotion is the same as an undivided heart, would you agree?
I find it interesting that there are two keys to an undivided heart. In fact, I see them outlined in the next 2 verses in Psalm 86:12-13
12 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;
I will glorify your name forever.
13 For great is your love toward me;
you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.
These keys are surrounded by the element of praise.
Praise God for Who He is.
Praise God for what He has done.
I would encourage you to take a sheet of paper and list all the things you can think of that describes who God is.
Then take another sheet and list all the things you can think of that describes what God has done in your life and throughout mankind.
Add to these lists on a daily basis for at least a week. As you do, your undivided heart will become a holy temple filled with the same characteristics that describe God.
15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.
