1 Samuel 20:11–17 ESV

And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field. And Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded out my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? But should it please my father to do you harm, the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also if I do not disclose it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the Lord be with you, as he has been with my father. If I am still alive, show me the steadfast love of the Lord, that I may not die; and do not cut off your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.” And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord take vengeance on David’s enemies.” And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

Guiding light, one life to live, general hospital. . . and the list goes on. . . somehow some way, these stories captivated audiences to tune in every day, five days a week to see what Victor Newman was going to do.

Great stories, movies have a way of pulling you in and keep your attention. Multiple plots, hardships and failures.

david is no different

david has done everything right up to this point

fights for Saul and God’s people

serves the king and follows his orders

This puts him a place where people began to hold him yo high esteem. . Saul has killed thousands. . . david 10, 000’s and things began to go wrong.

Saul became a hater and not a congratulator

But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually. Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.

And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, “Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.

Saul

saul fell into the traps of hatred and distrust for no reason: 19:1–5 With great deliberateness and exactness the writer chronicles Saul’s growing efforts to eliminate David. Although he initially loved David (16:21),

Saul came to fear him (18:12) and then to seek his death. Saul’s attempts began with a murderous thought (18:11), then progressed to awkward homicidal acts hidden from public view (18:11).

Saul then crafted a wider and more artful plan that involved public lies (18:22) and a small circle of people, including servants and a daughter. The circle of involvement widened when this effort failed.

Dropping all ruses, Saul now explicitly ordered Jonathan and all his servants to “kill David” (19:1).

Jonathan

His plan to protect david-

First, he “warned” (v. 2) David by revealing Saul’s intentions and timetable for murder.

Next, he formulated a plan of escape for David.

Finally, he proposed a plan to gather further information from the king and pass it along to David.

Jonathan’s plan initially worked and this:

Jonathan fulfilled his part in the plan as he “spoke well of David to Saul” (v. 4). He urged the king to reconsider his plans for David and provided Saul with several reasons for doing so. The first reason was David’s innocence; that is, he had committed no crime against the crown that would require his death. Second, on the positive side David had been of great help to Saul by killing a dreaded enemy. Third, Saul should spare David’s life to avoid committing a serious sin, that of shedding innocent blood.

19:6–7 Jonathan’s impeccable reasoning achieved—for the time being—the desired result: Saul “listened to Jonathan” (v. 6). The king took a solemn oath “by the life of Yahweh” (NIV, “as surely as the Lord lives”) to underscore his decision that “David will not be put to death.”

Having negotiated the reconciliation, Jonathan went at once to David to inform him of his success and accompany David back to the royal household. As a result, “David was with Saul as before” (v. 7). For the time being, at least, David was spared by the efforts of Jonathan, the man who had perhaps the most to gain from David’s death.

An evil spirit comes on saul and david is on the run

David-

20:1–3 After witnessing four attempts on his life in one day, David certainly had no reason to doubt Saul’s determination to kill him. Yet to escape the king’s attacks, David would have to abandon the two most significant people in his life, his best friend Jonathan and the wife of his youth, Michal. Even if he were to escape and live, would life be worth living under those circumstances?

But if he is angry and loses his temper, you will know he is determined to kill me. 8 Show me this loyalty as my sworn friend—for we made a solemn pact before the LORD—or kill me yourself if I have sinned against your father. But please don’t betray me to him!”

Keep a cool head

don’t seek vengeance, let God handle your battles.

he took care of David; saul’s family helped david get away, the spirit of God protected david against saul as well

11 “Come out to the field with me,” Jonathan replied. And they went out there together. 12 Then Jonathan told David, “I promise by the LORD, the God of Israel, that by this time tomorrow, or the next day at the latest, I will talk to my father and let you know at once how he feels about you. If he speaks favorably about you, I will let you know. 13 But if he is angry and wants you killed, may the LORD strike me and even kill me if I don’t warn you so you can escape and live. May the LORD be with you as he used to be with my father. 14 And may you treat me with the faithful love of the LORD as long as I live. But if I die, 15 treat my family with this faithful love, even when the LORD destroys all your enemies from the face of the earth.”

16 So Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, saying, “May the LORD destroy all your enemies!” 17 And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.
