VI. SALVATION: a complete and eternal salvation by God's grace alone, received as the gift of God through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work (Ephesians 2:8–9 (NASB95) 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

1. Salvation is God-centered, not man-centered.

1. Salvation is {God} -centered, not {man} -centered.

a.God died and rose again.

a.God died and rose again. According to 1 Corinthians 15:3–5 (NASB95) 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. What are the main points of the Gospel? {Christ DIED for our sins...was BURIED...RAISED on the third day – all according to the Scriptures; Gospel means “Good News”}

b. Titus 3:5–7

Titus 3:5–7 NASB95
5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
{Here we see that salvation is not based on human good works, but upon
Hismercy, His washing, Hisregenerating & renewing work, Hisgrace to justify us}

c. Hebrews 10:10–14

{Here we see the one time, perfect, and complete sacrifice for sin made by the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross}
Hebrews 10:10–14 NASB95
10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.

d. God chose us.

d. God chose us.
Ephesians 1:3–7 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
Ephesians 2:4–5 NASB95
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
{Here we see God’s election, predestination, forgiveness, and granting of new life to us all due to the infinite ‘riches of His grace’ (1:7b).}

e. God Made the Payment

e. God Made the Payment {Here we see the requirement of Christ’s sacrificial blood [death] for the complete payment of our sins; redeemed [lutro,w] from sin’s slavery & penalty}
1 Peter 1:18–19 NASB95
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
Conclusion: We believe that salvation is a complete... salvation by God's grace alone.

2. Salvation was accomplished through Jesus Christ.

2. Salvation was accomplished through Jesus Christ. The {nature} of Christ’s work on the cross is expressed by four key concepts:

1. Salvation is God-centered, not man-centered.

2. Salvation was accomplished through Jesus Christ.

2. Salvation was accomplished through Jesus Christ.The {nature} of Christ’s work on the cross is expressed by four key concepts:

a. Christ's death and resurrection gave us {redemption} :

i.
Mark 10:45 NASB95
45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
{lutro,w – a ransom or purchase price paid to free a slave; cfTitus 2:14}
ii. {avgora,zw – to buy; of general marketplace; generic purchase; Rev. 5:9}
1 Corinthians 6:20 NASB95
20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
iii. Galatians 3:13Galatians 4:5
Galatians 3:13 NASB95
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
Galatians 4:5 NASB95
5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
{evxagora,zw – to buy out of; buy back; redeem [paid & taken home]}

b. Christ's death and resurrection reconciled us to God:

i.
Romans 5:10–11 NASB95
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
{v10 verb, katalla,ssw; v11 noun, katallagh,; reconciliation is to mend a broken relationship; where two enemies become mutual friends}
ii.
2 Corinthians 5:18–20 NASB95
18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
{For six hours on the Cross, God was extending His hand of friendship to an avowed enemy, sinner man. Man must respond by extending his hand of friendship to God through faith. Reconciliation is a two-way street.}

c. He satisfied God’s Anger. Christ's death and resurrection was the propitiation for our sins:

i.
Romans 3:25 NASB95
25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
{i`lasth,rioj (Adj.) – propitiation is to turn away wrath by offering a gift/sacrifice; to appease; put smile on angry face}
ii.
1 John 2:2 NASB95
2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
1 John 4:10 NASB95
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
{i`lasmo,j (Noun) – Christ’s death accomplished an eternal appease- ment for the believer (1 Th. 1:10), but only a temporary stay of execution for the unbelieving world (Rev. 6-20).}

d. He took our Place.

Christ's death and resurrection was a substitution :
i.
1 Peter 2:24 NASB95
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Isaiah 53
Romans 4:25 NASB95
25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
ii. 2 Corinthians 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
{u`pe,r means ‘for, in behalf of, for the sake of’; So Christ died in the ‘stead’ / ‘place’ of those deserving death}
Definition: The first three terms together, redemption, reconciliation, and propitiation, comprise the {atonement} .

3. Salvation is by God’s grace coupled with man’s faith:

1. Salvation is {God} -centered, not {man} -centered.
2. Salvation was accomplished through Jesus Christ. The {nature} of Christ’s work on the cross is expressed by four key concepts:
3. Salvation is by God’s {grace} coupled with man’s {faith} :
Ephesians 2:8–9
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

a. Faith is a Result of God’s Grace.

Grace is the unmerited {favor} of God: Romans 3:24
Romans 3:24 NASB95
24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

b. Faith is man’s response

Faith is man’s response, of belief and trust, to God’s grace Romans 1:16
Romans 1:16 NASB95
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

c. Faith Apart from Works Makes Us Right Before God

c. Faith Apart from Works Makes Us Right Before God. Human works have {no} {part} in man’s justification before God.
{cf Rom. 4:4-5; 11:6; If works are added to ‘grace,’ it’s not a gift but something earned.}
i. Justification is a legal term indicating a declaration of {not} {guilty} .
{the verdict of acquittal}
ii. To justify means ‘to declare and treat as {righteous} .’
{to reckon as guiltless, and declare as just}
iii. In God’s sight we are justified by {faith} alone Romans 4:3
Romans 4:3 NASB95
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
Romans 4:9
Romans 4:9 NASB95
9 Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.”
Galatians 2:16
Galatians 2:16 NASB95
16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
iv. Consider the wording of Romans 5:1–2
Romans 5:1–2 NASB95
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
(1) Is justification a continual process or an accomplished fact? {‘having been justi- fied’ [Aor Ps Ptc] one time act in past; Justification is not a process of becoming righteous, but a verdict that we have received Christ’s righteousness; 2 Corinthians 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
(2) Why is this an important teaching?
{If it were a process rather than a judicial decree, then we would have to work continuously to be and to stay justified. Thus a works salvation, not of grace!}
Conclusion: We believe that salvation is received as the gift of God through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work.

4. We can never lose our salvation

1. Salvation is {God} -centered, not {man} -centered.
2. Salvation was accomplished through Jesus Christ. The {nature} of Christ’s work on the cross is expressed by four key concepts:
3. Salvation is by God’s {grace} coupled with man’s {faith} :
4.Salvation Cannot Be Lost. Once we have trusted Christ, we can never {lose} our salvation:

a. We Didn’t Find It to Begin With - John 6:37

John 6:37 NASB95
37 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.

b. We Are Kept By God - John 10:27–28

John 10:27–28 NASB95
27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
{cf Romans 8:38-39}
Conclusion: We believe that salvation is an eternal salvation by God's grace alone.
