The 50 Most Important Teachings of The Bible: What They Mean for You 6. The Bible Is the Ultimate Handbook for Life

What exactly is a handbook? One helpful definition is that it’s “a concise manual or reference book providing specific information or instruction about a subject or place.” If you think about it, that’s what the Bible does too. It is a concise reference and instruction book for living a life that is pleasing to God. For that reason, as your boss said about the company handbook, “You might want to become familiar with it.”

The Bible introduces you to God’s standard for living.
Exodus 20:3–17 ESV
3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
The Bible is a guide.
What is the purpose of a guide? To help you find your way. Do you have any idea where you are going? Well, God stands ready to point you in the right direction, and He has given you a guidebook in the Bible. “This God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end
Psalm 48:14 ESV
14 that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever.
Is there any area of life and living where the Bible cannot help? No—“his divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life”
2 Peter 1:3 ESV
3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
The Bible is a light
Psalm 119:105 ESV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
The Bible is a map
Do you realize that Earth is not your home, that you are only passing through? The apostle Peter calls us “foreigners and exiles” in 1 Peter 2:11.
As a pilgrim in this world, you must study God’s map to know the way. If you ignore the map, you will wander aimlessly through life and risk missing out on all God has for you while you are here on Earth
1 Peter 2:11 ESV
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
The Bible Equips You!!
The Bible equips you. Most handbooks are training manuals. If you want to do your job well, then you must read and follow the instructions in the manual. It’s the same way with the Bible. Second Timothy 3:16
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
There are not many things in life that you can say are absolutely 100 percent profitable, but the Bible makes this claim for itself. It is profitable for…Teaching—The Bible is “God-breathed”—it’s from God Himself, which makes its teachings a source of authority on how you should live your life.
Reproof—The Bible offers rebuke to those in sin. Who better to hold you accountable for right living than God Himself through His Word!
Correction—The Bible explains what it means to turn away from sin and toward righteous living.Training or instruction—The Bible shows you how to live a life that pleases God and glorifies His name.
The Bible Gives Wisdom —Where does wisdom come from? God is the source of all wisdom. And because God is the author of the Bible you can be assured that it is filled with His wisdom. But wisdom doesn’t just happen. You have to decide to “get wisdom”
Proverbs 4:5 ESV
5 Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
The Bible gives wisdom.
Where does wisdom come from? God is the source of all wisdom.
And because God is the author of the Bible you can be assured that it is filled with His wisdom. But wisdom doesn’t just happen. You have to decide to “get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:5).
This requires reading and studying the truths of the Bible. Wisdom is then produced as you apply God’s life-changing truths to your life.
As you follow the Bible, you’ll make fewer mistakes. Be wise! Read your Bible, discover its truths, and apply its wisdom moment by moment as you live out each day. Pray Moses’ prayer:
Psalm 90:12 ESV
12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
What Does This Mean for You?
You can count on the Bible 100 percent of the time for 100 percent perfect instruction and information.
It is indeed the 100 percent perfect handbook for life—which makes it an essential resource.
Remember, the Bible shows you the way to eternal life, and is given to you “so that [you] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17).
2 Timothy 3:17 ESV
17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Be faithful to study God’s Word so you will know how to do God’s work and endure the challenges you face.
