They wanted Jesus because of the food, because they wanted a king, and wanted their own miracle worker.
Just as a reminder let me read to you those verses explaining these things.
If we go back to verse 26 in chapter 6 we see that it says. John 6:26
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
Heavenly bread as we have talked about was major draw to people. Food in general will draw people to things, when otherwise they would not come, and one of the main reasons they were following Jesus was for all the things they could get, including food. The best meals are the free ones, but following Jesus has its cost. And false disciples will leave when they see the cost.
Remember they also wanted Jesus to be there king.
Lets go back to Verses John 6:14-15
14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
They saw what he had done, and they wanted him to be there king, not there Lord as I have said already during our study. This quite fascinates me because of the political times we ourselves live. Jesus does incredible things they want to make him king. In our day some political figure does incredible things, or comes with some new thing, or starts a movement and people want to make them king, or president, or governor, supreme court justice ect…
They want to follow these people because they think, we will be better off if this person is in charge, when often that may not be the case. Now for them, Jesus being in charge would be the best thing for them, but he was not sent to earth for that purpose at that time, and honestly the people didn’t get it.
Most people if they were honest if people wanted to make them a King they would love it, but Jesus is a different kind of authority he is Lord, so when Jesus said the things he has said so far to them it was hard for them to wrap there head around it because they so desperately wanted him to be king. It upset them because he would not be there king.
They also demanded he do what they wanted him to do..
30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
Jesus is not some genie in a bottle that grants you three wishes, he is Lord and does whatever he pleases. So many people want to fix Jesus in this box, and make him who they wanted him to be. False disciples do this all the time, and thats why they are not true disciples.
Another reason they said the saying was hard and grumbled is they wanted to be in charge over their own faith…
We saw this in John 6:41-46
41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
They did not like what Jesus said, and they honestly could not do anything about it. Jesus challenged everything they ever knew spiritually . They thought in physical ways, thought everything was up to them, but as the scriptures say that could not come unless the father drew them. They were in absolute rebellion to God, and it frustrated them, because they could not wrap there heads around what Jesus was thinking, because they defaulting to thinking who Jesus should be.
Another reason they said the saying was hard and grumbled was they didn’t see Jesus as greater than Moses and sent by God.
Looking back at John 6 we see this in a couple of places.
32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
and John 6:58
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
Jesus stresses the point to them the bread you ate from heaven which God gave you through moses does not give the life which I can give. They failed to see that moses was a servant of Christ. It upset them Jesus made such claims, and it causes this tension between them and Jesus. But the text clearly states the Jesus is greater than moses.
Last reason they said the saying was hard and grumbled was they thought in physical ways.
The Gospel according to John 6. Divided Opinion and Divine Initiative (6:59–71)
The extended metaphor of the ‘bread’ is itself offensive to them, especially when it assaults clear taboos and becomes a matter of ‘eating flesh’ and ‘drinking blood’
Back in John 6:51-58 said…
John 6:51–59 (ESV)
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
Again as we have seen over and over again there minds drift to physical things. And what I drove home when I talked about the text was Jesus wanted them to feast upon himself by faith, yet there desire was not to do that.
Jesus was never what they expected him to be, and false disciples of Christ will do there best to make him out to be everything they want him to be, but not follow him for who he truly is. False disciples will always be questioning Jesus, and not obeying his commands.
