I SWEAR

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

MARCH 21. – HOME WORK – OBSERVATION
Matthew 5:33–37 (NKJV): 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
Matthew 5:33 (NKJV): 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’
Who is talking? -JESUS
His disciples
Why did He say “Again “?
This again is to emphasize what He was saying and his authority to say it.
‘You have heard that is was said’
This is 3rd ‘you have heard that it was said’ of a series of 5. in the 5th chapter of Matthew verses 21, 27, 33, 38, and 43.
What was heard?
Meaning they understood what that heard. In each one of the statements Jesus told them what they heard from old traditions - Misunderstanding - though mis- interpenetration of the true meaning of the word of God
Who said it? God spoke to Moses to tell to all the congregation of the children of Isreal
Leviticus 19:12 - You shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God. I am the Lord
Verse 11 has a strong attachment to verse 12.
Verse 11 ‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.
Who is “those of old?”
The people of long ago
The children of Isreal that were in the wilderness.
“You should not swear falsely"
All the children of Isreal.
Who would swear falsely?
The Canaanites of Moses times.
The Romans of Jesus time .
Falsely swearing would spill over to the people of God
What is a swear?
To make a statement
What does Jesus means with swear?
Making a statement that is not true
Making a promise that you are not going to keep, or can’t keep.
What does swear means to His
disciples?
Making a promise using God’s name.
To make God your wittiness to your broken promise.
When and why would someone swear?Falsely?
See Leviticus 5:2

4 ‘Or if a person swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man may pronounce by an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters.

Who has done a swear in the pass.
Abraham
If so when and why?
Gen 21:23 “Now therefore, swear to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt
Why
Because Abraham’s word was not trustworthy. Abraham had lied to Abimelech about Sara being his sister
But God reviled the truth to Abimelech in a dream.
But, -
Comparison or Contrast? Or Command?
“Shall preform your oaths unto the Lord"
What is the difference between swears and oaths
The swear is more like a promise with a demand to the to keep it. “I promise to God to keep my oath”.
My oath is a promise to do something to or for someone else.
see Gen 12:23-24
What is an oath
A conformation
A guarantee of
an agreement made, a covenant made, a promise made.
See Hebrews 6:13-20 “For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
How do a person preform an oath
Why is the oath preformed to the Lord
Can an oath be preformed to something or someone else?
