The Girl Restored and The Faithful Woman Healed
The Girl Restored and The Faithful Woman Healed
Mark 5:21-42
Main Idea: Trust takes action
Me:
Trust but micromanaging
When I was working at Hy-Vee I really wanted to trust my people.
I really did.
Because I have had bosses that micromanage and it is the worst.
You guys ever have a boss like that?
Where they tell you something to do then they are just on top of you until you get it done and they you they don’t care how it is done but you know and I know that if it is not done a certain way then the boss will either do it theirselves or they will just kinda watch over you as you fix it.
So I promised that I would not be that boss.
I would just trust all of my people.
Which sounds great on paper.
But not everyone is trustworthy.
So While I was working at a little tiny hy-Vee on Rockingham Road, Davenport IA I had to learn an important lesson.
I was pretty new to the whole Hy-Vee management, as a bakery manager.
And I knew that I did not want to micromanage people.
So I had this worker named Polly.
She was the donut gal.
So she came in at 11PM and worked until 7am.
It is a pretty lonely time to work but she did a pretty good job.
Expect she would never make any Asiago Bagels.
It is the best bagel in my opinion.
And to make this bagel it takes time to unthaw and as it is you cover it with Asiago cheese.
You pitch it all in and man you bake it and when it comes out— it is the best bagel on the planet---I will fight you have this!!
So Polly never made any.
It was always the first bagel we ran out of.
And our store manger loved the Asiago bagel.
He would come by and get on everyday and if we didn’t have one he would call me and ask me what happened to the Asiago Bagel.
And I would say— I have some in the proof box they will be done in a couple of hours.
But by that time it was over.
No one wanted them then.
So I would tell Polly to make sure that she had the bagels the next day.
No bagels.
And Todd my boss called me up to the office one day— And I really liked Todd— I think he taught me so much about managing people well.
But he sat me down and said hey— I think that you need to put Asiago bagels on the list everyday.
And I was like great idea— I’ll let Polly know.
And He was like, no you need to just put them on the list, Polly isn’t putting them on the list.
And I told him how I didn’t want to micromanage someone and he is like that is great--
Nobody wants to be micromanaged.
Cool— so I will just mention it to her.
And he was like nah— you are going to add it to the sheet.
And here is what he told me.
Micromanaging is not what you call informing your employee that if she doesn’t do the work then she will be out of a job.
You can’t trust her to do the job.
He went on to say— if you don’t trust your people then you will not lead well.
Polly was not one I could trust.
So I started making the list of donuts and man, was Polly mad.
She didn’t talk to me for a week.
I kept making the list and the bagels got done.
To where I begin trust her.
And Of course we talked about why we needed certain stuff.
And Guess what I gave her back the ability to make the list and she got it— she made Asiago bagels.
While she may have felt micromanaged.
I just didn't trust her— because she never did what I ask her to do until I stepped in.
And once we talked and she got it— I stopped.
You see when you trust someone it is because their actions tell you they are trustworthy.
I had to believe that Polly was going to do what I asked.
I had to trust her.
and when she did those things without being told that is when I knew I could trust her.
But I could have told her I trusted her but I could have keep asking hey you got Asiago bagels on the list.
Polly wouldn’t have felt trusted right.
I had to trust that she was going to do what she said she was going to do.
We all do this don’t we?
We:
We say we trust someone or we have faith in someone but we still are not fully open.
We check and recheck and then check so much because we don’t trust the person.
It involves having faith in people.
It involves trusting them.
And when they are letting you down over and over again— you may wonder why do I keep trusting you?
Because If people let you down often are you going to keep trusting them?
Heck No!
Because in order for you to be trustworthy— I have to trust you.
and if I can’t trust you then I don’t have faith in you.
If you let people down— they probably won’t trust you.
If you are always late— people will begin to count on your lateness.
And doubt that you will ever be on time.
So if you want to be trustworthy— guess what you have to prove that by your actions.
Jesus is very trustworthy.
You can trust in Him and His actions.
100%
For Jesus never lets us down.
He is faithful— you can trust in him.
And I hope that is because you have seen God move and work in your life to which you know he is faithful.
His actions over time keep showing you that you can trust in Christ.
God:
and the passage I want us to look at today is a 2 for 1:
You have two encounters for the price of one.
We are in Mark 5, tonight.
So flip there and we will begin to read in verse 21.
And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him.
And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement.
It would have been so amazing to see and follow Jesus.
Like he was a celebrity that brought huge crowds and everyone followed him.
It was hard to walk if you were Jesus because so many people were trying to get to him.
and enter this ruler.
Someone with a lot of authority.
and he comes to Jesus and is like Jesus you have to help me.
I have heard of your trustworthiness and I know know that you are the only one who can help.
My daughter is really.
but if you were to come to her and lay hands on her— she would be alive.
And Jesus sees this from this man as a huge act of faith.
And he gets up.
and he begin to fight the crowd that are pushing against him.
And in this crowd is another woman who has had a blood discharge for 12 years.
Like literally being on your period for 12 years.
Not being gross here— this is the reality of what is happening.
And she has been doing this for 12 years.
awful!
But it gets to a deeper level then that.
One of my commentaries puts it this way.
The Gospel according to Matthew a. A Sick Woman and a Dead Girl, 9:18–26
The woman’s disability was not only a physical malady but one that had significant social implications; she would have been ceremonially unclean (Lev. 15:25–27), and therefore cut off from the ceremonial observances of the community. She could not join in worship, and her contact with other people would have been restricted because even a touch from her would make people unclean (Lev. 15:27).
But like the ruler she had faith that Jesus could heal her.
She thought, if I just touched his robe— I know that It would heal me.
And so she tries to make to Jesus.
All the same time that Jesus is trying to go heal someone else.
But here is what is amazing.
That even on his way to the 12 year old girl Jesus still impacted people.
and this woman made it to Jesus and she touched his robe and Jesus stopped in this tracks.
Because something amazing happened.
this woman who had only knows this constant state of bleeding for the last 12 years had stopped.
She had to be over joyed.
But then quickly brought back to earth— When she hears Jesus asking— who touched me.
Who touched me.
I bet she thought she was in huge trouble!
Jesus knew that someone touched him because he felt them get healed.
And in this moment there were only two people on the planet who knew what happened.
It was Jesus and this woman.
And the whole time Jairus is like yoooo- lets hurry up.
Remember my daughter that is on death’s doorstep— like I need you Jesus.
But Jesus is never in a hurry.
He is knows that someone needed Him
and when he felt his robe get touched— he begins to search for her.
Can you imagine being this woman and knowing what happened it was because you touched him.
And you stepped forward.
I but it was so scary.
But she comes forward and Jesus is like you have been made well because of your faith in me.
And while this miracle was going on— Jairus’s servant comes up and tells him that his daughter was dead and to leave Jesus alone.
But Jesus hears this and speaks
Do not fear, only believe.
And Jesus keeps going with Jairus to his house and when he gets there he sees everyone crying and he is like why are you crying.
She is only sleeping.
Which is funny to them but Jesus wasn’t laughing and he was speaking the truth.
And Jesus goes to this little 12 year old girl and tells her to get up!
And guess what!
She comes alive!
mind-blowing stuff!
Here is what I find interesting:
The little girls father had to have faith that Jesus would heal his daughter
The old women had to have faith that Jesus would heal her just by touching his robe.
It took a huge leap of faith for both people.
Maybe they thought, what do I have to lose.
And they went all in and trusted him.
You:
So right now how is your faith?
are you seeking Jesus because of your faith in him?
Is God asking you to trust him?
How is God asking you to trust Him?
In what ways do you need to trust Him?
will you trust him?
When you pray for God to move— do you believe that he will or do you just do it because that is what you are suppose to do?
We:
If we had faith in Jesus to move in our community, I think we would see more people healed, and more people coming to Him.
