it was not about the lost son but the older brother.
2 Ways to get lost:
1. You can get lost running from God (younger son)
but you can just as easily get lost at home.
[STATE PROBLEM]
2 Ways to get lost:
1. You can get lost running from God (younger son)
2. You can get equally lost at home with God (older son)
attending, serving, giving, reading bible
huge risk if you’ve been a christian for a long time
OBS: Older Brother Syndrome
when you loose your heart for people far from God
seems like everything is going great....
Luke 15:25-32
“Meanwhile....
soundtrack changes
Luke 15:25-32
Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.
Luke 15:25-32
‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’
Luke 15:25-32
“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders.
Luke 15:25-32
Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
Luke 15:25-32
“My son,” the father said, “you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”
[WHY PROBLEM]
Signs you may have OBS:
We loose our heart for people who are far from God.
this is the mission of the church
jesus had and passed down.

go deeper
Hebrews 5:12
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
Luke 15:28
“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.
anger reveals
Signs you may have OBS:
You get angered when life doesn't go your way.
this reveals hat you are following God for what he will give you than for what he has given you.

THE SOLUTION (15min)

[STATE SOLUTION / BOTTOM LINE]
We must follow Jesus more for what He has given us than for what He will do for us.
follow more for what he has done than the promises
when first saved, its easy to be saved on His goodness. later we shift to think about what we can get.
older brother - you haven’t given me....
longer we are Christians the easier it is to blame others.
story of wife with hearing problem (move to beginning)
Luke 15:29

Luke 15:30
But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
easy to point at others and miss our issues
"A clear conscience is a clear sign of bad memory."
~Mark Twain
"Those who do not think about their own sins make up for it by thinking incessantly about the sins of others.
~C.S. Lewis
how many times do i fall in to that trap
othes sins are bigger than ours
self-righteiousness
the ground is level at the foot of the cross.
as soon as we start pointing to others flows is when we have OBS.
We are on mission when we are focused on helping others find Jesus.
