introduction
How many of you had a family tradition for your birthday when you grew up?
My mother’s for the four of us was to allow us to pick the restaurant to eat at on the night of our birthday.
Now when you have younger siblings you know how they act, and it never failed, on every one of our birthdays ONE of the siblings would inevitably shout out “I don't want that!”
Then my mother would say the sweetest words…”It is not about you today!”
Can i tell you this morning that Christianity is not about you and your glory?
Can i tell you that the bible is not about you.
That worship is not about you, and the sermon is not about you.
Christianity certainly includes you, and you were bought with a price, you are precious in the eyes of God.
He loved the world to the point that he gave his only begotten son so that you would not perish.
BUT that does not mean that you have now been elevated to the point of veneration!
The ONE who we are to make it all about Is CHRIST.
HE IS THE ONE THIS SERMON IS ABOUT.
HE IS THE ONE THE SCRIPTURES ARE ABOUT
IT IS HIM, NOT YOU, NOT ME, HIM
Read Luke 9:18-27
We are going to focus on this passage about the cross this morning.
It is repeated several times in the gospels
With it being repeated so many times we ought to pay attention then to these words of Jesus
I. Why Did Jesus Say This?
Let us examine the context of the passage
This is the revelation of God to Peter according to Matthew 16:17
Jesus’ true self is reveled to the disciples, His identity is the Christ, the Son of God.
Now the question is what does it mean to be the Christ
The people of the day saw the Messiah as the one who would come and over throw the Romans
He was to a war lord and a political figure
But then Jesus Gives us the true description of the Messiah…
Not a messiah who would conquer the romans
But a messiah that would
Then Peter took him aside and REBUKED HIM
Wait.
Jesus just said “Blessed are you SImon Barjona!”
Yet Peter understood Christ to be something other than what Jesus truly had come to do!
He wanted a war lord, But Christ came as the suffering servant of Isaiah 53
Peter wanted the crown and the glory, but none of the cross and none of the suffering.
Peter misunderstood Jesus
How do you understand Jesus?
Is One who will give you everything you WANT
Is he one who will make your life perfect?
Is he one who will give you all the money you want?
Is he one whos will must be your will because you know what’s best for your life?
Who is Jesus to you?
Because Peter reacted this way to the cross of Christ
Jesus then says
Jesus says to Peter, you dont want me to suffer?
You WIll suffer too if you follow me.
II.
What Is Jesus Saying?
He is NOT SAYING
Each of us have an individual cross to bear
When this or that happens in our life it is our cross to bear
Friends, unbelievers go through suffering also.
Jesus is not speaking of common suffering in this life
He is speaking of a particular type of suffering which is unique to those who follow Jesus
That unique suffering is displayed in what Jesus says, it is to “DENY” yourself.
Deny your flesh
Deny your immoral desires
Deny your heart that wants to hate
THAT, when it is truly done in the Spirit of Christ will often manifest itself as suffering
To bear your cross and deny yourself is:
Suffering
Obedience
Sacrifice
Continual
“Follow me” = GK is a continual action that started in the past and continues until the present
Every DAY
III.
What Does this Mean For Me?
This means that we are to deny our selves
Old way of this in Latin was renounce
We are to say it is no longer me who is important, I AM NOT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD
We must put away our pride
WHY?
Pick up your cross
The cross is the center of all Christian theology
Jesus bore your sins on the cross, yet he tells us we are to pick up our own cross and bear it so that we might follow him.
We must understand that Christianity is not easy.
Follow him
By taking the cross daily
By denying myself daily
So that my soul is saved!
Why, why does this matter?
Because Christ WILL RETURN.
What state will he find you in on that day?
Will you be found in a state of denial of Christ or commitment to Christ?
You will one day receive the crown if you pick up the cross today
