11 along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured—and yet the Lord rescued me from them all.

12 In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

13 Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived.

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you,

15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,

17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

BIG IDEA: Discipleship as a practical view of Christian life

Introduction: Christian life is not some thing that you do. It is not some thing that you add to your schedule and if you can get around to doing it you do. It’s not a list of dos and don’ts. It is a lifestyle that permeates every aspect of our lives.

Galatians 2:20 CSB

20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Christian life is also not meant to be done alone. If we are going to be faithful, community and discipleship must be an important part of what we do.

Hebrews 10:24–25 CSB

24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.

Timothy watched Paul suffer. Timothy has an idea of how to suffer for Christ. Suffering is a part of the Christian life.

SUFFERING OUGHT TO BE EXPECTED (VS. 10-12)

Paul contrast the teaching of the false teacher with his own teachings. And not only that but also his conduct because the two must go hand and hand.

Antioch and Iconium (v. 11) “These towns were in the area from which Timothy came, and Timothy was aware of these episodes when he agreed to join Paul in the ministry (Acts 16:1–6)”.

Timothy must have expected suffering to be apart of ministry. This is not not just everyday suffering but this is religous suffering, suffering because of the faith (LAY INTO THIS)

John 15:19 (CSB)

19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you.

here’s the hope “the Lord rescued him from them all” (v. 11) ek=out/exit out of them all. Remember he is about to be killed for the faith.

Paul speaks in absolute terms with ἐκ πάντων, “out of them all.” In every instance the Lord delivered him. And even when the last episode comes and leads to death, the Lord will still deliver, for then, Paul says, the Lord “will deliver me from every evil deed and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom” (4:18

QUESTION: What is a godly life?

They will progress (v. 13) but you remain (v.14).

Paul points Timothy to the ultimate source of discipleship, the Word. Timothy is to be discipled by the Word and to disciple with the Word.
