Intro

How many of you have ever had someone say something good about you?
Have you ever let that go to your head?
Have you ever thought oh Im so good at this I cant mess up
Then you did
We have heard the saying pride comes before the fall
There are many things in society that tell us we are to chase success
Then celebrate our own success and make sure everyone else knows about it
Im the man Im the Man Im the man song
That is societies view
Drake Concert
If you must tell everyone something you probably arent that thing
As we continue this series in a life well lived there is something a character trait that marks all people who have lived their life well
This trait is humility
Now we dont see this as a value in our society right
You can go a tell everybody “i’m the man”
Let’s see what the bible has to say about this
Read Proverbs 15:33
Proverbs 15:33 ESV
33 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 11:2 ESV
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
Proverbs 12:9 ESV
9 Better to be lowly and have a servant than to play the great man and lack bread.
Proverbs 18:12 ESV
12 Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 22:4 ESV
4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
Proverbs 27:1–2 ESV
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. 2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
Those are just a few of the proverbs we see that talk about humility
The bible is a book that calls us to humility
As you read through this entire book your view of God and Jesus should be made great and your view of yourself should deflate
This book serves to make much of God and Little of us
A christian who lives there life well will be a humble christian
Ok lets look at a couple of these proverbs

First we see that Humility is not something we can claim

Read Proverbs 12:9
Proverbs 12:9 ESV
9 Better to be lowly and have a servant than to play the great man and lack bread.
Proverbs 27:1–2 ESV
1 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. 2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
So this song that we listened to is the opposite of this idea
Just like Drake
Dont sing your own praises lest you be wrong
The wisdom that the scripture shows us is that a humble spirit is one who does not go around declaring there goodness
We do this in many ways
Sometimes its how we portray ourselves
Look at Proverbs 12:9
Proverbs 12:9 ESV
9 Better to be lowly and have a servant than to play the great man and lack bread.
This proverb could also be used for debt but dont make more of yourself than you ought

Humility is title others give us

Second we see Humility leads to honor

Read Proverbs 15:33
Proverbs 15:33 ESV
33 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 11:2 ESV
2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
This is classic pride comes before the fall
But whats more is honor comes after humility
Proverbs 22:4 ESV
4 The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

Finally Humility is shown through Obedience

Read Philippians 2:3-11
Philippians 2:3–11 ESV
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
