John 16:33 (CSB)
33 I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
29 I have told you now before it happens so that when it does happen you may believe.
11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.

Isaiah 61:1–4 (ESV)
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me
to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
4 They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.
It’s All Coming Down
It’s All Coming Down
Mark 13:1–2 (CSB)
1 As he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!”
2 Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another—all will be thrown down.”
Don’t trust in worldly structures, systems buildings and institutions
1 Corinthians 3:10–17 (CSB)
10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one is to be careful how he builds on it.
11 For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.
12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.
14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved—but only as through fire.
16 Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and that is what you are.
Pics of Important Buildings
What are you building your life on?
is it the foundation of Jesus Christ — the Cornerstone of the New Temple?
It doesn’t matter what your profession is
is it being built on faith in Jesus Christ
Ex) As simple as devoting everyday to God and being willing to hear from Him about your work.
When?
When?
Mark 13:3–4 (CSB)
3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,
4 “Tell us, when will these things happen?
And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”
Matthew 24:3 (CSB)
And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
They have two questions for Jesus
When will this happen?
When will they be completed?
In other words, when is it going to start and when is it going to end
We want to know when.
When are we going to get there?
Rather than answer he paints a picture for them.
not so much what to know, but how to know
His point:
It’s not about knowing exact details
but that I am with you!
I will guide you.
Fig Tree
Fig Tree
Mark 13:28–29 (CSB)
28 “Learn this lesson from the fig tree:
As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.
29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that he is near—at the door.
Jesus’ point:
I will be with you
I have gone before you
See and don’t be Deceived
See and don’t be Deceived
Notice the first thing Jesus says in response
Mark 13:5–6 (CSB)
5 Jesus told them, “Watch out that no one deceives you.
6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many.
Mark 13:21–23 (CSB)
21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘See, here is the Messiah! See, there!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.
Watch out — SEE
See that you are not deceived — led astray
Many will come in my name — in the name of Jesus? in the name of God?
saying “I am he” — “ego eimi” — I AM
or I am the Christ — the Savior — the Anointed OneFalse Messiahs and False Prophets
Do we have any of those today?
The Truth: It’s going to get bad, and then really bad
Who or what is your Christ?
False Christ’s -
science, self actualization, false religions
technology, money, status, security
missile defense system
False prophets
god won’t judge,
God just wants you to be happy,
god wants you to be whoever you are and whatever you feel,
god doesn’t care about suffering and sin and evil (he does that’s why he sent Christ)
TRUTH: It’s going to get bad
TRUTH: It’s going to get bad
Mark 13:7–8 (CSB)
7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed;
these things must take place, but it is not yet the end.
8 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines.
These are the beginning of birth pains.
Man made distasters
Natural Disasters
only the beginning
Birth pains — woman in labor
Persecutions
Persecutions
Mark 13:9 (CSB)
9 “But you [yourselves], be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.
This is true of Peter, James, John and Andrew — Acts
but also of many followers since (Paul)
It’s going to get really bad
It’s going to get really bad
Mark 13:12 (CSB)
12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
This is happening in our day
If a muslim converts to Christianity they can be put to death
they will likely be disowned and lose everything
Rifqa Bary - Hiding in the Light
Leaving Islam for Christianity cost her more than she imagined, but gave more than she could have dreamed.
Rifqa Bary grew up in a devout Muslim home, obediently following her parents’ orders to practice the rituals of Islam. But God was calling her to freedom and love. He was calling her to true faith. He was calling her to give up everything.
Hiding in the Light is the story of Rifqa’s remarkable spiritual journey from Islam to Christianity. It is also the untold story of how she ran from her father’s threats to find refuge with strangers in Florida, only to face a controversial court case that reached national headlines. Most of all, it is the story of a young girl who made life-changing sacrifices to follow Jesus—and who inspires us to do the same.
Mark 13:13 (CSB)
13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
It’s going to get really bad.
Are you experiencing affliction today?
Don’t be surprised
Abomination of Desolation
Abomination of Desolation
Mark 13:14–18 (CSB)
14 “When you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be” (let the reader understand), “then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15 A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house, 16 and a man in the field must not go back to get his coat. 17 Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days! 18 “Pray it won’t happen in winter.
Daniel 9:27 (CSB)
Luke 21:20 (CSB)
20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that its desolation has come near.
Fall of Jerusalem
Fall of Jerusalem
Mark 13:30–31 (CSB)
30 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Affliction and Tribulation
Affliction and Tribulation
now he begins to zoom back out to more general global language
Mark 13:19–20 (CSB)
19 For those will be days of tribulation, the kind that hasn’t been from the beginning of creation until now and never will be again. 20 If the Lord had not cut those days short, no one would be saved. But he cut those days short for the sake of the elect, whom he chose.
Watch out!
Don’t be Deceived

Mark 13:13 (CSB)
13 You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
endure = hypomonew
abide
Romans 5:3–5 (CSB)
3 And not only that, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. 5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
HOW TO ENDURE
Purposes of God
Presence of God
Promise of God
Purpose: Gospel
Purpose: Gospel
Mark 13:10 (CSB)
10 And it is necessary that the gospel [FIRST] be preached to all nations.
Mark 13:10 (ESV)
10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.
Why?
The gospel must go forth to all nations
suffering in affliction may be the most powerful witness to the gospel
we are in a fallen world
what is the Gospel
what is the Gospel
Jesus experienced the ultimate desolation in the cross
the temple of God was destroyed

Presence: God’s Spirit
Mark 13:11 (CSB)
11 So when they arrest you and hand you over, don’t worry beforehand what you will say, but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it isn’t you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
I will be with you
I will empower you to make disciples
Great Commission
Promises: I am coming back
Promises: I am coming back
the great hope of Christianity — Christ’s return
Mark 13:24–25 (CSB)
24 “But in those days, after that tribulation: The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; 25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
apocalyptic language
Mark 13:26–27 (CSB)
26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 He will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
This is the great hope
Christ will come back to deal with satan, sin and death
no more suffering
If there is no resurrection then we are to be most pitied.
19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.
This is the Great Promise of God
you are not forgotten in your affliction
God will come
But when?
But when?
Mark 13:32 (CSB)
32 “Now concerning that day or hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son—but only the Father.
Jesus as God and MAN

Be about the father’s work

Be alert — be vigilant about the father’s work
Mark 13:34–37 (CSB)
34 “It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his servants, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert.
35 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 36 Otherwise, when he comes suddenly he might find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!”

Mark 14:34–38 (CSB)
34 He said to them, “I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”
35 He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”
37 Then he came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Prayer — other gospels and manuscripts of mark add this (and pray)
We can always pray
A direct line to the Creator of the Universe
A God who cares for us, who walks with us
We must learn that prayer isn’t just Talking TO GOD
but Talking WITH God.
Praying
the flesh is weak
don’t fall asleep
Don’t think danger isn’t near
