to proclaim liberty to the captives,

and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn;

3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

4 They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

It’s All Coming Down

Mark 13:1–2 (CSB)

1 As he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!”

2 Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another—all will be thrown down.”

Don’t trust in worldly structures, systems buildings and institutions

1 Corinthians 3:10–17 (CSB)

10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one is to be careful how he builds on it.

11 For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.

12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.

14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved—but only as through fire.

16 Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and that is what you are.

When?

Mark 13:3–4 (CSB)

3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,

4 “Tell us, when will these things happen?

And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

Matthew 24:3 (CSB)

And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

They have two questions for Jesus

When will this happen?

When will they be completed?

In other words, when is it going to start and when is it going to end

We want to know when.

When are we going to get there?

Rather than answer he paints a picture for them.

not so much what to know, but how to know

His point:

It’s not about knowing exact details

but that I am with you!

I will guide you.

Fig Tree

Mark 13:28–29 (CSB)

28 “Learn this lesson from the fig tree:

As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.

29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize that he is near—at the door.

Jesus’ point:

I will be with you

I have gone before you

See and don’t be Deceived

Notice the first thing Jesus says in response

5 Jesus told them, “Watch out that no one deceives you.

6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many.

Mark 13:21–23 (CSB)

21 “Then if anyone tells you, ‘See, here is the Messiah! See, there!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance.

Watch out — SEE

See that you are not deceived — led astray

Many will come in my name — in the name of Jesus? in the name of God?

saying “I am he” — “ego eimi” — I AM

or I am the Christ — the Savior — the Anointed OneFalse Messiahs and False Prophets

Do we have any of those today?

The Truth: It’s going to get bad, and then really bad

Who or what is your Christ?

False Christ’s -

science, self actualization, false religions

god won’t judge,

God just wants you to be happy,

god wants you to be whoever you are and whatever you feel,

god doesn’t care about suffering and sin and evil (he does that’s why he sent Christ)

TRUTH: It’s going to get bad

Mark 13:7–8 (CSB)

7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don’t be alarmed;

these things must take place, but it is not yet the end.

8 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines.

These are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “But you [yourselves], be on your guard! They will hand you over to local courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them.

This is true of Peter, James, John and Andrew — Acts

but also of many followers since (Paul)

12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.

This is happening in our day

If a muslim converts to Christianity they can be put to death

they will likely be disowned and lose everything

Rifqa Bary - Hiding in the Light

Affliction and Tribulation

Mark 13:24–25 (CSB)

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation: The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; 25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 He will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

This is the great hope

Christ will come back to deal with satan, sin and death

no more suffering

If there is no resurrection then we are to be most pitied.

19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.

This is the Great Promise of God

37 Then he came and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

We must learn that prayer isn’t just Talking TO GOD

but Talking WITH God.
