Intro

The evnts of this weekend changed the world.
No one woul have believed it. An obscure jewish trouble maker was executed along with others.
Just another weekend in Rome.
But this was no ordinary man. This was Emmanuel -God is with us.
And this was no ordinary execution.
This was a purpose of God to bring about reconciliation between Himself and sinful man.
How did He do this? How does a Holy God who cannot look at evil, reconcile Himself to men whos hearts are always bent on evil?
God’ solution is the most humbeling reality.

Atonment.

Atonmet is an intresting biblical word.
Its not actually from greek or latin, as are many of our words.
Its actually an old english word which literally comes from:
At-one-ment.
It the idea of 2 parties, who are against, contrary to each other, finding peace and coming together to be one.
Well humanity and God could not be more contrary.
So how does a Holy God, bring peace between Himself and a people contrary to Him?
How does Atonment fix the problem?
There are 2 factors that go into making atonment.
1: The cause of the division.
2: The effects of the division.
Take 2 people who are aurguing.
Person 1 took something from person 2 because they thought person 1 gave it to them.
How do we make peace between these 2 people?
1: We need to clear up the confusion that led to the division.
2: We need to rectify the effects of the confusion and give the object back.
Only when BOTH parts are done can be reconciliation.
The cause must be delt with and the effect must be delt with.
So lets look at sinners relationship with God.
In the Garden of Eden Mankinds disobedience seperated them from God.
What is the cause of man seperation from God?
Sin.
Isaiah 59:2 RSV
2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you so that he does not hear.
What is the effect of our sin?
Wrath
Ezekiel 30:15 NASB95
15 “I will pour out My wrath on Sin, The stronghold of Egypt; I will also cut off the hordes of Thebes.
So lets see how, through Jesus Christ, God made reconciliation.
Lets srat with how God delt with the cause: Sin.
Theologically this is known as Expiation.
Expiation has as its focus the CAUSE of our seperation: Sin.
In the OT there is a beautfil forshadowing of this in the ritual of the scapegoat.
On the day of Yom Kipper, btw, Yom Kipper is the Day of atonment.
2 goats wrere brought to the priest, we’ll look at the other in a moment.
One of the goats was selected to be a scapegoat.
The priest would lay his hand on the goats head and “transfer” The people sin onto the goat.
This goat was then driven out of the camp into the wilderness, symbolising that the ins of the people left with the goat.
Ok, so how does Jesus fulfill this?
On the cross, Jesus like the goat, took on himsewlf all the sins of the world.
And just as the goat was sent into the wildness, Jesus died and our sins with Him.
1 Peter 2:24 RSV
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Look what scripture is saying:
Jesus took all our sins upon himself. Scripture actually says:
2 Corinthians 5:21 RSV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
So there is Jesus, on the cross, with all my sins, all your sins, all everyones sins on Him.
Then what happened to Him?
He took those sins away, to a place where they can never be fetched or found.
Which place? Death.
Now, when God say were to look for your sins He wont find them.
Hebrews 10:17 RSV
17 then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their misdeeds no more.”
Romans 8:1 RSV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
The cause of our seperation, our sins, has been removed by the grace of God.
Our sin has been Expiation.
1 John 4:10 RSV
10 In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins.
But there still remains one thing to sort out.
The cause of our seperation is sin.
But the effects of our sin is wrath.
And Wrath needs to be satisfied.
Dealing with sin is called Expiation.
But dealing with wrath is called Propitiation.
Lets go back to the 2 goats.
One goat, the scape goat, was sent away to deal with sin.
But the other goat was not.
The other God was not for expiation but for propitiation.
Dealing with God’s wrath.
Let take a moment to talk about God wrath.
God wrath is not some emotional grudge that he has.
His wrath is based on his indignation, which itself it based on his Holiness and justice.
God wrath is not a temper symtom, its a holiness symtom.
Romans 6:23 RSV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God’s righteous wrath towards our sin must be delt with.
This is exacally what Jesus did.
Romans 3:24–25 NASB95
24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
1 John 2:2 NASB95
2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
1 John 4:10 NASB95
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
This is what the song writer sings about when they say: “Till on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was sitisfied”.
So lets summerise our Joy.
In Jesus Christ.
The cause of our seperation from God is gone.
Psalm 103:12 RSV
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
The effects of our sin is gone.
Romans 5:9 RSV
9 Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
As a Christian in Christ, all because of Jesus you are atoned.
At-one-with-God.
At-peace-with-God
reconciled to God so that you may enjoy the fruits of a relationship with God.
All this is only because of God.
And thus to God be all the glory!
