Mark 4:35–41 ESV
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
pray
I searched the word fear. there was a search done by states to see what fears were searched the most by each state in 2020
Top 5 phobias in America in 2020
Fear of failure - 11 states
Fear of Blood - 9 states
Fear of water - 7 states
Fear of Intamacy -4 states
Fear of spiders - 3 states
Fear of the outside - 3 states
Only Montana searched fear of humans the most. With the states wide open space it’s not hard for people to stay away from each other.
Utah was the only state with fear of needles
6 out of the 7 states who searched fear of water mostly boardered bodies of water. fear of storms and flooding
I have a fear myself it’s called sidonglobophobia.
It’s the fear of cotton balls.
It’s a sensory phobia It’s believed to affect a hand full of people in the world.
In fact Michael Jackson is believed to have suffered from it.
Tell the storie of being sick and not touching the cotton in the medicine bottle.
If you read through the book of Mark you will see the healing power of Jesus.
Jesus has healed a man with a unclean spirit.
He cleansed a leper.
He’s healed the paralytic
He heals a man with a withered hand
He’s called the 12 Apostles
In chapter 4 Jesus is by the sea and there is a large crowd so he got in the boat away from the shore.
He begins to teach them through parables about the kingdom of God.
In the last verses of the chapter Jesus is going to confront something that we have all thought about and are somewhat fearful of that’s death
One of the greatest truths you can learn is that Jesus has power over Sin and Death
The Calm Before The Storm
Mark 4:35-36 “On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.”
It had became evening Jesus had been teaching all day lives were bing changed people were being healed and Jesus says lets go to the other side.
36 they took him just as he was he did change cloths get something to eat they just left.
Have you ever work or ministered all day and were just tired to the point you said im done?
The Calm During The Storm
Mark 4:37-38 “And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?””
Where the sea of gallile is like a bowl with mountains on each side.
The mountains cause these fierce windstorms to come rushing down the mountain on to the lake causing large wave on the lake some 5 to 10ft in hight
The storms were worse during the day . causing the fisherman to fish at night when the water was calmer.
The Bible says this was a great windstorm.
the storm was so bad that the waves were crasing in the boat with more water than they could tose out of the boat with a bucket.
How many of you have felt the power of a wave crashing over you at the beach.
we see fear begin to overtake the disciples.
The fear of the inevitable is upon them.
the wind and waves are out of thier control
They are experienced sailors this is not the first storm they have been in but the fear it could be there last.
have you ever been doing what Jesus told you to do and things that are out of your control rise up.
What storm is in your life that it feels like the waves are about to overtake you at any moment?
Mark 4:38 “But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?””
Do you ever feel like Jesus is asleep in the midst of your storm?
I have when i was in the hospital after being burn i remember thinking this is bad?
this is more than i can take but I don’t want to die.
Here’s the question we have all asked in the midts of the fear of the storm that’s in our lives.
Teacher do you not care that we are perishing?
do you not care that this is happening in my life?
the Answer is yes he cares!
They just hadn’t figured out who was in the boat with them.
he was still teacher and hadn’t became LORD
I think we also forget who lives inside of us as well when we face fear that comes into our lives.
It’s a dark day when the sailor wakes the carpenter up to address a sailors situation
Jesus isn’t just the carpenter he is the creator
when he speaks things exit and obey
He is sovereign over everything.
Colossians 1:15-17 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Those same guys that thought jesus was sleeping in their hour of need would be the same men that would sleep on him in the garden when he asked them to watch and pray in his hour of need.
Jesus is never asleep in your time of need
The Calm After The Storm
mark 4:39-41 “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?””
Have you ever had Jesus just show up in the middle of the storm in your life or the fear that has you frozzen and speak and everything change?
Jesus show his sovereignty over the wind and the sea.
PEACE! BE STILL
mark 4:40 “He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?””
what are you afraid of?
show picture and video
when you go through
a storm you won’t be the same person when you come out of the storm.
Mark 4:41 “And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?””
We are left to answer this same question
Who is this Jesus?
Psalms 46:1-3 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah”
