Romans 6:14 (KJV 1900)
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Grace did not nullify the Law.
Anytime there is a standard of holiness
No condemnation
Where do people get this idea that there shouldn’t be any rules to our conduct or no standards of holiness or righteousness
Romans 8:1 (KJV 1900)
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
They end the verse at the coma rather than continue to the end of the thought.
There will be feelings of condemnation in your life if you walk in the flesh
Living in the Spirit is liberating if one is truly living and walking in the Spirit
But there are those who think they are living in liberty but who are actually heading towards deeper bondage.
Truly understand what it means to not be under the Law
Romans 3:20 (KJV 1900)
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
The Law is a Light Shining on Sin
The Law is Holy
Romans 7:14 (KJV 1900)
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
The Law is Spiritual
The Law is Good
8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
No one can get saved without being confronted by the Law
We are living in a day when many many people struggle with
Authority
Boundaries
Requirements
Holiness
We are a lawless nation
No one has the right to tell me what to do
I don’t answer to anyone
The Law was not created by God to be something that you can accomplish or fulfill in order to get to Heaven - The Law was created to teach us we can’t get to Heaven by our own works of righteousness - The Law teaches us we were sold under sin. In Bondage to sin and the flesh.
We are not strong enough to win any victory. We are weak through the flesh.
The Law is not a way to prove how spiritual you are either.
The Law and Grace perfectly compliment one another
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Jesus did not come to destroy but to fulfill
πληρόω - G4137
Fulfill - means to complete, satisfy, fully preach, and to perfect, Finish, Verify, Accomplish
17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.
25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Till all come to it’s fullest strength
Matthew 5:20 (KJV 1900)
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
The Pharisees were so proud of their ability to keep the Law
Jesus said your righteousness must exceed theirs
People thought the Pharisees were doing great, but is wasn’t God’s righteousness
Your righteousness must exceed
21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Jesus was going to bring the Law into full strength
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Raca = O empty one, that is, thou worthless (as a term of utter vilification): - Raca.
Be careful how you talk about others...
fool = dull or stupid (as if shut up), that is, heedless, (morally) blockhead, (apparently) absurd: - fool (-ish, X -ishness).
Calling names that implicitly or explicitly point at someone’s ineptitudes - be careful
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
I am going to show you what is truly possible through the power of my Spirit
Jesus came to fulfil - Meaning Jesus came to so
complete, satisfy, fully preach, and to perfect, Finish, Verify, Accomplish
That the Spirit gives power to go above and beyond the Law
So Jesus gives instruction that as it pertains to
Anger
Lust
Revenge
Marriage
Enemies
I’m going to give you power to go above the Law
I’m going to give you the power to understand and fulfil greater actions than the Law outlines
Jesus goes from the act of sin down to the depths of the heart of man
Making it spiritual and dynamically powerful
A Power to not desire to break God’s Laws
A power to desire to do right
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Obeying the Law in Spirit and in heart
The law of the flesh breeds self righteousness
The Law of the Spirit brings God’s laws into our heart
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
These things would be difficult to understand operating in the flesh.
Law requiring forced labor - but in the heart of a Christian there is a longing of the Spirit to go further, to do more for others, to be spent for the Lord’s glory
When someone hurts us the Spirit says - forgive and pray for them
When a test of morality is presented the Spirit says dont even think about that in your heart
When someone is trying to take something from you the Spirit of God will say maybe they need more
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Spirit Empowered Obedience
Flesh Empowered Works
The power has been raised
The Law reveals
Grace takes you to a place of power
Unfortunately many have used grace to excuse themselves from obedience, service, fellowship
Grace calls us higher plain of power and the ability to answer the call of obedience and righteousness from the heart - not to a place of excusing our actions
Grace has placed us above the Law
Liberty to not sin not live to sin
A performance based Christianity in order to be accepted rather than an inner
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
Grace is our teacher
how to deny
how to live
Without Grace it is impossible to live that way
See someone living without any discipline, or sobriety - Grace didn’t say that
Justifying themselves by works - Grace didn’t teach you that
You can work yourself to the bone trying to please people, trying to be accepted by your works of righteousness -
I know what it’s like to hear people preach that if you’re not doing ________ you are not right with God
Grace will take you to a higher plane of power
I can preach for hours about the evils of media
what is available through streaming
social connection sites
but if you are not operating in the Spirit and in Grace
you won’t have victory over any of it
The Spirit of Grace replaces the carnal desires that leads to disobedience
Romans 8:1 (KJV 1900)
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
We were unable to reach the perfection required to be able to enter into glory, into heaven - Right?
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Your righteousness had to exceed the righteousness of the pharisees
I got angry
I don’t feel like fellowshipping so I wont
I watched something I shouldn’t have
I didn’t do what I knew was right to do
Your acceptance was not rooted in your works to begin with
Your acceptance is not rooted in your works right now
You are operating in catholic teachings
You don’t
The Grace that saves also keeps
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Romans 8:4–5 (KJV 1900)
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Victoriously living - defeating the work of sin, living conquering the power of sin - that happens walking after the Spirit
Walking in the Spirit we are minding the things of the Spirit
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
The carnal mind can’t submit to the Laws of God
In the flesh you can’t please God
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
The flesh is an enemy of God
Grace does not take you below the law
We’re under grace so now we can drink alcohol
That is under the law
Moral purity
Grace is above that sin
Sin is any transgression of God’s law
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Romans 6:1–2 (KJV 1900)
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Grace is more powerful
Just sinners
We fail
Thankful for grace
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
If you’re saved, You don’t have to sin
What are you yielding to
Jude 3–4 (KJV 1900)
3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Spirit tells you what your eyes should not see
The Spirit tells you what your mind should not think
The Spirit tells you the words that shouldn’t be spoken
The Spirit tells you where you should be
What you should say
What your heart should ponder
You get to choose whether you will be under the law or under Grace
You get to choose whether you will place yourself in the power of the Spirit as you operate under Grace
Well I just go against the Spirit’s promptings - you just acted in the flesh and placed yourself under the law
By humility comes grace
The law is the outward demonstration
Grace brought the ability to have the heart to want to please God
We are not just struggling to do what is right, but gracefully
When you excuse listening to the flesh, it’s because you enjoy it in your carnal man
Grace doesn’t permit us to sin, it gives power to do right and desire to please God
You will not mind the things of the flesh
The Spirit filled life takes you above straining and trying to preform to a powerful life of fruitfulness, faithfulness, obedience, joy
