Let me set the scene, its super bowl Sunday, Suddenly a team people thought would win is down 28-3 at half-time. All hope is sucked from the game, and it seems over. But a miracle takes places, and the team that had 3 points in the first half goes on to win 34-28. That team was the New England patriots, and they were led by one of the greatest underdog stories in sports, Tom Brady. Drafted 6th overall, no one expected him to win. And yet he’s a 7 time super bowl winner, 5 time NFL MVP, and so many more accolades. But something that struck me in this story of Tom, when asked what fueled the comeback, most people assumed hate and revenge. But for Tom it was LOVE. He remembered that at the start of the season his mom became very sick, his love for her and the memories of being here before so many times helped fuel his tenacity to win.
See memory plays a major factor in our life, when we remember it can often times give us fuel for the future.
Memory is the act of recalling a person, or an event. However in the old and new testament memories and the act of remembering is not just linked to cognitive recall. Rather, remembering something implies acting in accordance with what is remembered.
In the scripture we read today, we enter one of the greatest underdog stories in human history, the battle of David and Goliath. What’s interesting about this story is, not that a teenage shepherd boy who was anointed king overcomes a giant, but rather how he overcame a giant.

David remembered his past with God to give him faith for the future. (1 Samuel 17:32-37)

It’s just my opinion but I believe the thing that killed Goliath was Davids faith in a God who has always provided for him.

Church when was the last time we remembered the mighty works of God to give us faith for our now and future?

One and Only Point: When we remember the previous works of God, we can trust Him with our now and future.

So how do we do this?

1.) Remembering our past with God.

-David in Psalms 77 writes “Then I thought, “To this appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.”
-For a lot of us, we so quickly forget the God who got us through the moment adversity hit, in fact in preparing this story, I thought “Wow Isreal so quickly gave up when a giant came along, when not so many years before God rescued them from a giant called Egypt and brought them into the promise land.”)
-Have the church repeat this, “Every Previous victory…is faith for my present and future.”
-David remembered the victories in his past, and that fueled his faith for the now.

2.) Being present in the now with God.

-David knew God wanted to go about defeating Goliath in a unique way. But before that Saul tried to place an idenity on David to disrupt what God was trying to do in the now.
-We see this in 1 Samuel 17:38-40
