The promise of redemption.
The redeemer wouldn’t rest until redemption was secured.
Yet how is it secured.
There had to be a legal transaction to take place.!
The City Gate
City gates in Palestine in the early iron age were complex structures with lookout towers at the outside and a series of rooms on either side of the gateway where defenders of the town would be stationed.
But these gateways also served a secondary purpose, as a gathering place for the citizens of the town.2
This was where the official administrative and judicial business of the community was conducted.
Having arrived at the gate, he “sat there.”
The citizens would recognize this as an official act; he had arrived for legal business.
This reminds us of the legal transaction to took place in Christ.
Romans 5:9 (ESV)
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
The redeemer takes care of our business before the court.
Justification is a legal declaration where God declares a sinner righteous because of the work of Christ.
The purchase of redemption.
ruth 4:7
Redemption is not just about me its about my family.
Ruth 4:11–12 (ESV)
11 Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses.
May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel.
May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem,
12 and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
The land was never to leave the family and the redeemer was an institution who’s purpose in part was to make sure that the land never passed out of the family klan.
The redeemer provides a future.
The redeemer brings provision and protection.
The redeemer ensures a promise.
