1 Corinthians 10:12-13 – 12 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (New Living Translation)

The Source of Temptation

• The world is the external foe

1 John 2:15 – Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. (New Living Translation)

James 4:4 – You people aren’t faithful to God! Don’t you know that if you love the world, you are God’s enemies? And if you decide to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. (Contemporary English Version)

• The flesh is the internal foe

Galatians 5:19-21 – 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I tell you about these things in advance – as I told you before – that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Holman’s Christian Standard Bible)

1 Corinthians 6:19 – Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? . . . (New Living Translation)

• The devil is the infernal foe

Ephesians 6:12 – For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (New Living Translation)

The Seat of Temptation

1 Thessalonians 5:23 – Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. (New Living Translation)

▸ The first seat of temptation is the ____________

▸ The second seat of temptation is the ____________

▸ The third seat of temptation is the _______________

Hebrews 4:12 – God’s word is living and active. It is sharper than any two-edged sword and cuts as deep as the place where soul and spirit meet, . . . (God’s Word Translation)

John 4:24 – [Jesus said,] “For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (New Living Translation)

Romans 8:16 – For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. (New Living Translation)
