Psalm 107 Oh That Men Would Praise the Lord
Travis Snode / General Psalm 107
Intro: Thank & Praise the Lord (v.1-3)
The book of Psalms is actually a collection of five dierent “books” or collections of Psalms (1-41; 42-72; 73-89; 90-106; 107-150).
• Psalm 107 is the first Psalm in the last (5th) book of Psalms. In this Psalm, God’s people are challenged to:
• v.1 give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and His mercy • v.2 praise the Lord for how faithful He has been to redeem them out of the hand of the enemy
It is very possible that this Psalm was written a"er Israel was “redeemed” from their time of captivity in Babylon and brought back into the land (v.3).
• This is exactly what they had prayed for in Psalm 106:47
Psalm 106:47 KJV 1900
"à Save us, O L$%& our God, And gather us from among the heathen, To give thanks unto thy holy name, And to triumph in thy praise.
• Psalm 106 is a prayer of repentance to God in which the nation of Israel acknowledged their sin and asks for salvation and regathering from among the heath.
• Psalm 107 seems to be a prayer of gratitude and a song of praise for answering that prayer.
This Psalm is something we can and should pray as well.
• We should give thanks unto the Lord because He is good to

1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: For his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; 3 And gathered them out of the lands, From the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. 4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; They found no city to dwell in. 5 Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them. 6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And he delivered them out of their distresses. 7 And he led them forth by the right way, That they might go to a city of habitation. 8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! 9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, And filleth the hungry soul with goodness. 10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, Being bound in affliction and iron; 11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, And contemned the counsel of the most High: 12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; They fell down, and there was none to help. 13 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, And he saved them out of their distresses. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And brake their bands in sunder. 15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! 16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, And cut the bars of iron in sunder. 17 Fools because of their transgression, And because of their iniquities, are afflicted. 18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; And they draw near unto the gates of death. 19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, And he saveth them out of their distresses. 20 He sent his word, and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. 21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare his works with rejoicing. 23 They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters; 24 These see the works of the Lord, And his wonders in the deep. 25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, Which lifteth up the waves thereof. 26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: Their soul is melted because of trouble. 27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end. 28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, And he bringeth them out of their distresses. 29 He maketh the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof are still. 30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; So he bringeth them unto their desired haven. 31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! 32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, And praise him in the assembly of the elders. 33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, And the watersprings into dry ground; 34 A fruitful land into barrenness, For the wickedness of them that dwell therein. 35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, And dry ground into watersprings. 36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, That they may prepare a city for habitation; 37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, Which may yield fruits of increase. 38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; And suffereth not their cattle to decrease. 39 Again, they are minished and brought low Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow. 40 He poureth contempt upon princes, And causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way. 41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, And maketh him families like a flock. 42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: And all iniquity shall stop her mouth. 43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, Even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.

1 Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: For his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? Who can shew forth all his praise? 3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, And he that doeth righteousness at all times. 4 Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; 5 That I may see the good of thy chosen, That I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, That I may glory with thine inheritance. 6 We have sinned with our fathers, We have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. 7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; They remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; But provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. 8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, That he might make his mighty power to be known. 9 He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: So he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness. 10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. 11 And the waters covered their enemies: There was not one of them left. 12 Then believed they his words; They sang his praise. 13 They soon forgat his works; They waited not for his counsel: 14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert. 15 And he gave them their request; But sent leanness into their soul. 16 They envied Moses also in the camp, And Aaron the saint of the Lord. 17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, And covered the company of Abiram. 18 And a fire was kindled in their company; The flame burned up the wicked. 19 They made a calf in Horeb, And worshipped the molten image. 20 Thus they changed their glory Into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass. 21 They forgat God their saviour, Which had done great things in Egypt; 22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, And terrible things by the Red sea. 23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, Had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them. 24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, They believed not his word: 25 But murmured in their tents, And hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord. 26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, To overthrow them in the wilderness: 27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, And to scatter them in the lands. 28 They joined themselves also unto Baal-peor, And ate the sacrifices of the dead. 29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: And the plague brake in upon them. 30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: And so the plague was stayed. 31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness Unto all generations for evermore. 32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, So that it went ill with Moses for their sakes: 33 Because they provoked his spirit, So that he spake unadvisedly with his lips. 34 They did not destroy the nations, Concerning whom the Lord commanded them: 35 But were mingled among the heathen, And learned their works. 36 And they served their idols: Which were a snare unto them. 37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons And their daughters unto devils, 38 And shed innocent blood, Even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, Whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: And the land was polluted with blood. 39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, And went a whoring with their own inventions. 40 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, Insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. 41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; And they that hated them ruled over them. 42 Their enemies also oppressed them, And they were brought into subjection under their hand. 43 Many times did he deliver them; But they provoked him with their counsel, And were brought low for their iniquity. 44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, When he heard their cry: 45 And he remembered for them his covenant, And repented according to the multitude of his mercies. 46 He made them also to be pitied Of all those that carried them captives. 47 Save us, O Lord our God, And gather us from among the heathen, To give thanks unto thy holy name, And to triumph in thy praise. 48 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: And let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the Lord.

us and because His mercy and faithfulness endures.
• We should praise the Lord because He has redeemed us from the hands of our enemy.
• Through Christ, we are redeemed (set free) from: 1) the curse of the law (Gal 3:13), 2) all iniquity (Titus 2:14).
• The way we are redeemed is through the blood of Christ.
1 Peter 1:18–19 KJV 1900
" Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; # But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
As Israel reflected on where they were and what it took for God to deliver them and bring them back into the land a$er being scattered, they were challenged to stop and give thanks and praise to God.
As we consider the price the precious of blood of Christ that was shed for us, let us stop to thank the Lord and talk about what He has done for us!
TRANSITION
• A$er this call to praise in v.1-3, we are given various examples of how God delivers people in verses 4-42.
• As we look at these examples, we should quite easily be able to identify with times that God has delivered us and we should give thanks to Him.

18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
and Empty Wanderings (v.4-9).
Psalm 107:4–7 KJV 1900

" Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them. # Then they cried unto the L$%& in their trouble, And he delivered them out of their distresses. à And he led them forth by the right way, That they might go to a city of habitation.
• v.4 These verses paint a bleak picture of people wandering around a desolate wilderness.
• v.4 They cannot find any city to live in.
• v.5 They cannot find food or water.
• v.5 They are about to give up (“soul fainted in them”).
• v.6 But then they cry to the Lord in their trouble and he delivers them out of their distresses.
• v.7 He leads them forth by the right way and set them on the path for a city of habitation.
What a beautiful picture of deliverance!
• God has the done the same for so many.
• He delivered Hagar, cast out, abandoned, about to die.
• He delivered the nation of Israel wandering in the wilderness for 40 years.
• And He has delivered each of us, who really have no real direction or satisfaction without the Lord.
• Without Him, we faint and despair, but if we call upon the Lord, He will deliver and He has delivered us!
As a result, we should praise the Lord!

his wonderful works to the children of men! ! For he satisfieth the longing soul, And filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
• How tragic to be delivered in such a wonderful and refreshing way and then not praise the One who delivered!
• v.8 The Psalms says, Oh I really wish that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and His wonderful works.
• This is repeated in v.15,21,31.
• v.9 We should praise the Lord for truly He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry with goodness. APPLICATION
Are you wandering in a wilderness tonight? • Do you feel alone, empty, and longing?
• Are you hungry? Are you thirsty?
• Cry out to the Lord!
• He will deliver you out of your trouble and out of your distress!
• He will lead you forth by the right way and give you a permanent home!
And when He does and if He has already delivered, then praise Him!
2. We Should Praise The Lord For
Delivering Us From The Bondage
Of Our Sin (v.10-16).

14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And brake their bands in sunder.
the words of God, And contemned the counsel of the most High: " Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; They fell down, and there was none to help. # Then they cried unto the L$%& in their trouble, And he saved them out of their distresses. ' He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And brake their bands in sunder.
• In verses 10-14, we read another example of how the Lord delivers.
• v.10 These people are in darkness and are under the shadow of death, they are bound in aliction and iron (like prisoners on death row - no light, no hope, no freedom).
• v.11 Their bondage is due to their rebellion against the words of God and their rejection of the counsel of the most High.
• v.12 God brings down their heart with labour. They fall under the weight of their rebellion and their no one to help them.
• v.13 But when they cry under the Lord in their trouble, He saved them out of their distresses.
• V.14 He goes into the darkness of their bondage. He rescues them from the very shadow and breaks their bands and bonds asunder!
This could be a reference to King Zedekiah
• He was King of Judah when Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon came against them.
• He repeatedly ignored the Word of God through the prophet Jeremiah and consequently was taken by the Babylonians.
• His sons were killed before His eyes, then He was blinded and taken into captivity.
• There he said in a prison of His own making, in a place

where no man could help.
But God can deliver from the deepest, darkest bondage.
• You may feel like Zedekiah. All around you is dark. Death is shadowing over you.
• Very likely, your bondage is due to rebelling against the words of God in some way. (Rejection of God’s Word bring bondage. Faith in and obedience to God’s Word brings freedom.)
• But if you cry to the Lord, He will save you. He will bring you out of the darkness and death. He will break your bands in sunder.
And if He has delivered you and if He does, then praise Him!
Psalm 107:15–16 KJV 1900
" Oh that men would praise the L#$% for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! & For he hath broken the gates of brass, And cut the bars of iron in sunder.
• May you say with with me tonight:
• “Lord I praise You for Your goodness, for Your wonderful works to the children of men. I praise You God for breaking the gates of brass and cutting the bars or iron in sunder!”
• EXAMPLE: Lady (Nuala) God set free!
3. We Should Praise The Lord For Delivering Us From Trouble Caused By Our Own Foolishness

15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! 16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, And cut the bars of iron in sunder.
(v.17-22).
Psalm 107:17–20 KJV 1900
à Fools because of their transgression, And because of their iniquities, are alicted. $ Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; And they draw near unto the gates of death. % Then they cry unto the L&'( in their trouble, And he saveth them out of their distresses. )à He sent his word, and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
• Here, we read of another group that the Lord delivers - fools. • The previous group is foolish because the delivered rebel against God’s Word
• This group may be more ignorant or “simple” fools.
• v.17 They transgress God’s Word and get involved in iniquity and as a result are alicted with some kind of sickness.
• V.18 Their illness is so bad that they cannot eat and they are about to die (“near the gates of death”).
• V.19 These individuals who have no hope and no where to turn can cry unto the Lord and He will save them out of their distresses.
• v.20 He will send His word and heal them and deliver them from their destructions.
This is another great example of how God delivers.
• The wages of sin is death and all who sin will eventually experience the aliction of foolish sin.
• But the gi+ of God is eternal life for all who cry to the Lord for deliverance.
• Do you find yourself suering and alicted because of your own foolishness?
• Cry to the Lord in your trouble. He can and will save. He will

heal you spiritually and physically (in this life or the next). He will deliver you from your destructions.
And then let us praise Him for how He delivers us!
Psalm 107:21–22 KJV 1900
! Oh that men would praise the L#$% for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! !! And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare his works with rejoicing.
• Not only praising Him, but sacrificing the sacrifices of thanksgiving (service and worship) and declaring to others His works with rejoicing.
• Everything we do and say for the Lord should be done out of a heart of worship, praise, and gratitude for His goodness.
4. We Should Praise The Lord For
Delivering Us From Terrifying
Storms (v.23-32).
Psalm 107:23–30 KJV 1900

30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; So he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
a calm, So that the waves thereof are still. !à Then are they glad because they be quiet; So he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
In the verses, God describes another scenario where people are delivered - sailers out in the sea.
v.23 These people are employed in business on great waters. v.24 There they see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep.
v.25 They see how He can command a storm to come up with great winds and waves.
v.26 Their ships mount up to heaven and crash down to the depths.
v.27 These storms cause their souls to melt.
v.27 They reel to and fro and stagger like drunken men. Like the sailers on the boat with Jonah, they are “at their wits end” and don’t know what to do.
v.28 BUT, they cry unto the Lord in their trouble and He brings them out of their distresses.
v.29 He makes the storm calm and the waves to cease!
• NOTE: Jesus does this very thing in front of His disciples. He does what only God can do because Jesus is God!
v.30 When this happens, the people are so glad because things finally quiet and they are brought to their desired haven.
This passage reminds me of John Newton, the man who wrote the famous song “Amazing Grace”
• He had a Christian mother who taught him God’s word, but she died age 7 and John became a very ungodly young men. • He went to sea at age 11, learning the blasphemy and sin common among sailers.

• He joined the Royal Navy, rebelled, deserted, became a slave himself, then worked on a slave ship, captained slave ship until eventually he le! and became a preacher of the gospel and a proponent of abolition of slavery.
• One of the things that God used in John’s life was a terrible storm o the coast of Ireland in which he nearly died. During that storm, John cried out to God and eventually was brought into Lough Swilly and supposedly a church in Derry/ Londerrry where He gave his life to God.
• Nothing like a storm to terrify even the hardest of fools into crying out to God.
Let us praise God for delivering us from terrifying storms. Psalm 107:31 KJV 1900
# Oh that men would praise the L%&' for his goodness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!
• When we have faced storms that raise us up and crash us down.
• When our souls melted within us because of trouble.
• When we reeled to and fro, staggering like drunken men and women from blow a!er blow, when we were at our wit’s end, the Lord heard our cry and brought us out of our distress.
• Let us praise Him for the calm, for the stillness of soul, for the haven that waits us in heaven!
Let us exalt God here in our congregation and praise Him here in our assemply!
Psalm 107:32 KJV 1900
#( Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, And praise him in the assembly of the elders.

42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: And all iniquity shall stop her mouth. 43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, Even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
• Are we righteous enough to see it, to rejoice it, and to stop our mouths and our sin?
• Are we wise enough to observe what God is doing and to understand the lovingkindness of the Lord?
• As we see how God has delivered us and is delivering us from sin, from hell, from death, from aimless wanderings, from emptiness, from bondage, from foolisnhess, from storms, let us praise Him.
