Introduction

Quiz: Did Jesus fulfill these prophecies?
Jeremiah 31:15 NIV
15 This is what the Lord says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
Psalm 72:9–10 NIV
9 May the desert tribes bow before him and his enemies lick the dust. 10 May the kings of Tarshish and of distant shores bring tribute to him. May the kings of Sheba and Seba present him gifts.
Hosea 11:1 NIV
1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.
Personal
“All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near. Join me in glad adoration.”
Yes, there is evil in the world. But, we are not defeated. Nor should we be bunkered down barely surviving while we wait for Jesus to return and fix everything. We walk in victory now.
Biblical: We know this in part because of another prophecy about Jesus found all the way back at the beginning of the Bible in Genesis 3.
Genesis 3:14–15 NIV
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Subject: Jesus came to crush the serpent’s head.
He breaks the devil’s power
He destroys the devil’s work
He sets the captives free

Body

Jesus came to break the devil’s power (Heb 2:14-15).
Explanation
What is the devil’s power? Death and fear.
But Jesus defeated death and gives us victory over sin and death and the devil!
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 NET
54 Now when this perishable puts on the imperishable, and this mortal puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will happen, Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Illustration: Jesus allowed the serpent to bury its fangs deep in His heel. He took all the venom that snake had, and then He twisted His foot and broke the fangs off. The devil is a snake with no teeth, no sting, no venom. He has been defeated.
Application: We’re no longer slaves to fear. We are children of God. The devil has no power over us, no claim on us, no purchase in our lives. We can say no to sin. We can break the power of addiction. We can resist the devil and he will flee. Greater is the one who is in us than the one who is in the world (1 John 4:4).
Jesus came to destroy the devil’s work (1 John 3:8).
Explanation
What is the devil’s work?
Accusations. “Satan” means “Accuser.” He accuses us day and night… You’ll never amount to anything. You’re not good enough. You’re not pretty enough. You’re not smart enough. Now you’ve really messed up; if anyone finds out, you’ll in big trouble; better hide it. You’re worthless. No one could ever love you. Why would you think God would have anything to do with you? Go ahead and do that; nobody cares about you anyway.
Lies.
John 8:44 NIV
44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
The devil has been lying from the very beginning when he lied to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden… Paul said in Rom 1:25 that people have “exchanged the truth about God for a lie...”
Satan whispers lies to us all the time… You can look at her that way; your wife will never know. Have another drink; one more won’t hurt. You deserve to give yourself a little reward; you’ve been working really hard; go ahead, do it. You seem kind of down lately; I bet if you buy something for yourself you’ll feel better. If you go to that party, people will think you’re cool. Look at the new truck your neighbor just bought; wouldn’t you like to have a truck like that? You’ll never be happy single. Maybe God isn’t as good as you thought He was.
Murder. Look around us at the culture of death. Murdering unborn babies in the womb… physician assisted suicide… violence and hatred and murder… drug overdose… teen suicide.
Jesus came to destroy the devil’s work. To overcome lies with truth… hatred with love… violence with peace… oppression with justice… despair with hope… darkness with light… death with everlasting life… evil with good.
Application: You don’t have to believe the devil’s lies. You don’t have to listen to his accusations. We don’t have to give in to the culture of death.
John 8:31–32 NIV
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18-19).
Explanation
Free from the penalty of sin
Romans 6:23 NIV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Free from the power of sin
Romans 6:14 NIV
14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
Free from the presence of sin
Application: Are you free? Do you want to be? Follow Jesus and be free. (Like the song I Lay Me Down.)

Conclusion

Revelation 12:10–11 NET
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “The salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the ruling authority of his Christ, have now come, because the accuser of our brothers and sisters, the one who accuses them day and night before our God, has been thrown down. 11 But they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.
We will overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. Therefore, we rejoice!
Questions
Where is God convicting you, stirring you, or calling you in light of the Word today?
Have you ever been aware of being under spiritual attack? What happened? How did you know it was a spiritual attack? What did you do to counter the attack? Where have you seen death and fear at work in your life or in the lives of those around you?
Read Romans 1:18-32. How have you “exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (v. 25) in your life? How has the truth about Jesus overcome the lie?
Read 1 John 4:4. What does this verse mean? Who is “the one who is in you,” and who is “the one who is in the world”? Now read Romans 8:31. How can you apply the truth of these verses to your life?
Some people today think that belief in the devil is outdated, but the Bible clearly teaches that Satan and other evil spirits exist. One of the first steps to victory is knowing your opponent. What do you know about the devil and the demonic? Can you support your knowledge biblically?
Read Colossians 2:15. If Jesus defeated Satan at the cross, why is there still evil in the world today? Read Romans 12:17-21. According to these verses, how is evil overcome? What are some specific and personal ways you can overcome evil?
What are some of the lies and accusations you’ve heard or struggled with in your life? How does knowing the source of those lies and accusations (the devil) help you fight against them?
Read Galatians 5:1. Where have you experienced freedom in your life? Where do you feel like you haven’t experienced freedom, yet? Where in your life have you left your freedom and returned to “a yoke of slavery”?
Prayer
“The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8b NIV). Pray that Jesus will destroy the devil’s work in your life and/or in the life of someone you know personally.
“But they overcame him [the devil] by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony (Rev 12:11a NET). The “word of their testimony” refers to what God has done in a person’s life and that person’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Speak out loud in prayer a “word of testimony” to God, recalling how He has delivered you and declaring your continued allegiance to Jesus Christ.
Now, spend some time praying for Satan to be overcome and the message of Jesus to spread in:
Your home
Your neighborhood
Your workplace/school
Your city/community
Ask for opportunities to share Jesus with others in those circles through the word of your testimony.
