INTRODUCTION: airplane introduction.
Love each other.
Love each other.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Honor your father and your mother - not obey, but honor. This is a foundation for society.
Even as they grow older we can still honor them. How?
That your days may be long - so they won’t kill you haha
13 “You shall not murder.
Murder, not kill. Isn’t talking about war.
The first person ever born, was a murderer.
We say “ we aren’t that bad. We did’t murder anyone” as if that should be the bar.
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
Universally seen as wrong.
Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church.
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
15 “You shall not steal.
steal - most open ended of all the commandments.
Steal - can also mean kidnap. Which would carry death penalty.
steal property as well.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
legal term. In court of law.
Jesus said all our neighbor.
Good reminder that every time we lie, we hurt our neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Some might think, what’s wrong with this? no one gets hurt.
This one leads to all the others. If no coveting there would be no stealing no adultery, likely no more murder etc...
God’s Word kills our flesh.
God’s Word kills our flesh.
18 Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off 19 and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”
This is how awesome God is, he was speaking so scary that people was scared they would die. Different than us saying “ God speak to us” …haha sometime we wish God would speak audible to us....haha scream.
Fearing God results in avoiding sin.
Fearing God results in avoiding sin.
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.” 21 The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
fear - used in both senses. Don’t be scared, but have reverence.
That - the purpose of it: so you may not sin. Used His Dad voice. haha
22 And the Lord said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.
23 You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.
If you know the rest of the story, they are going to break this almost immediately.
24 An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.
Alter of earth - dirt.
burt offerings and peace offerings.
He is saying, every time I do something for you. Remember me. Make an alter for me.
You will fail, but Christ won’t.
You will fail, but Christ won’t.
25 If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.
hewn stones - build it without forming stones. The purpose was to focus not on the alter but the sacrifice.
The sacrifice was a picture of Christ.
Also, nothing fancy.
26 And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.’
hilarious. Moses was an 80 year old man. No one wanted to see that.
CONCLUSION: Last point. The law was given and so was instruction for an alter.
Story of a kid failing but being forgiven already??????
